NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Washington
(Thursday, November 30th)
Final Score: Washington 4, Dallas 3
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Alexander Semin scored his 10th goal of the season and Olaf Kolzig made 35 saves as Washington survived a late rally to beat Dallas, 4-3.
Richard Zednik, Chris Clark and Matt Pettinger also scored for the Capitals, who have responded with back-to-back wins after six consecutive losses.
Jussi Jokinen scored twice while Philippe Boucher added two helpers for the suddenly slumping Stars, who have dropped three in a row.
Goaltender Mike Smith had a rough outing, surrendering all four Washington goals on 14 shots through the first two periods and was pulled in favor of Marty Turco to start the third.
Down 4-1, Dallas managed a late rally in the third period to pull within a goal.
Stu Barnes' goal with 3:21 left in regulation made it a two-goal game and Jokinen's second tally of the game just over a minute later made it 4-3.
Dallas then pulled Turco for the extra skater, but Washington clamped down on defense for the victory.
Washington grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals by Zednik and Clark.
With 6:55 left in the opening period, Zednik one-timed a pretty pass from Brooks Laich past Smith for the first score.
Then, less than two minutes later, Clark's power play tally made it 2-0. With a scrum behind the Dallas net, the puck squirted into the slot and Clark's turnaround shot found the back of the goal.
The Stars managed to cut their deficit in half on Jokinen's power play goal just 41 seconds into the middle stanza, but the Capitals answered with two more goals to take a three-goal advantage.
Alexander Ovechkin could have boosted Washington's lead to two goals with 9:05 played in the second, when he was awarded a penalty shot, but Smith denied the chance to keep it a one-goal game.
However, the Caps persisted and opened up a 3-1 lead when Pettinger skated all alone into the Stars' zone and beat Smith through the five-hole with 2:07 left to play.
Then, with just 12 seconds left before the second intermission and Washington on the power play, Semin's shot from the point deflected off Smith's glove and into the back of the net to make it 4-1.
