NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Phoenix

(Saturday, December 30th)

Final Score: Phoenix 8, San Jose 0

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Curtis Joseph stopped 40 shots for his first shutout of the season and 48th of his career and Jeremy Roenick notched his 10th career hat trick as the Phoenix Coyotes crushed the San Jose Sharks, 8-0, at Jobing.com Arena.

Shane Doan had a goal and four assists and for the Coyotes, who have won two straight and three of their last four games.

Evgeni Nabokov started in net and gave up three goals on six shots for the Sharks, who have dropped their last three games and four of their last five. Nabokov was pulled late in the first period and replaced by Vesa Toskala, who finished with 15 saves on 20 shots.

Despite being outshot, 19-6, in the first period, the Coyotes scored three times to assume a 3-0 lead.

A little over three minutes in Roenick stripped Kyle McLaren of the puck at the blueline and snapped a wrister over the right shoulder of Nabokov.

Then, with his team on the power play, Zbynek Michalek sent a wrister from the right point that sailed over the glove of Nabokov at the 12:54 mark.

A little over two minutes later, Doan poked the puck into the net during a scrum in front.

Nabokov was then pulled and replaced by Toskala.

Things didn't get much better for San Jose in the second period as they again allowed three goals while failing to get on the scoreboard.

A turnover behind the San Jose net was picked up by Mike Comrie and he sent a centering pass to Travis Roche, who one-timed it past Toskala at the 8:04 mark.

An even-strength goal by Ladislav Nagy at the 12:24 mark and a power-play goal by Comrie with 4:06 remaining in the frame made it 6-0.

Roenick scored with 5:08 left in the third period and added another goal with 1:30 to play to complete the hat trick.
