NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Phoenix

(Thursday, March 8th)

Final Score: Vancouver 4, Phoenix 2

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Jeff Cowan continued his torrid play of late and opened the floodgates during a three-goal first period to lead the scorching Vancouver Canucks to a 4-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Cowan, who has six goals in the last four games, scored the first of three goals within a five-minute span along with Brendan Morrison and Markus Naslund for the Canucks, who have won four straight and improved to 10-1-1 in their last 12 games overall.

Dany Sabourin gave All-Star starter Roberto Luongo a rest and stopped 26 shots for Vancouver, which sits atop the Northwest Division four points ahead of both Calgary and Minnesota. Sami Salo added his 12th goal in the win.

The Canucks will visit San Jose and Anaheim over the next three days before they start a three-game homestand which includes a matchup versus the Wild on March 13.

Shane Doan and Jeff Taffe scored for Phoenix, which has dropped four straight games. Curtis Joseph allowed four goals on 30 shots in the losing effort.

The three-goal surge occurred during the middle stages of the opening period and was ignited by Cowan's marker. He whiffed on a shot from the right side, but regained control of the puck below the near circle and pushed home a backhander from the top of the crease at 7:50.

Under two minutes later, Morrison's 18th goal made it 2-0. Brent Sopel released a slap shot from the right point and Morrison redirected it into the back of the net with 10:34 remaining.

At the 12:33 mark, Naslund capped the uprising. He took a nice feed from Bryan Smolinski in the slot, maneuvered through a pair of defenders and lit the lamp with a wrister from in front for his 22nd goal.

Vancouver moved ahead by four 8:55 into the middle stanza when Salo unloaded from the left point and cleanly beat CuJo with a blazing slap shot.

Several minutes later, Doan put the hosts on the scoreboard with his 24th goal of the season. Blueliner Derek Morris held the puck above the right circle and passed into the low slot for Doan, whose wrist shot banked off the right skate of Sabourin and crossed the goal line with 8:22 remaining in the period.

Taffe's rebound goal at the right post at 4:52 of the third capped the scoring.
