NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at NY Rangers
(Tuesday, December 19th)
Final Score: NY Islanders 4, NY Rangers 3
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Jason Blake's fourth career hat trick led the Islanders to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
Alexei Yashin recorded the other goal and Tom Poti registered a pair of assists for the Islanders, winners in three of their last four games. Rick DiPietro made 30 saves in his 14th win of the season.
Jaromir Jagr scored twice and Brendan Shanahan notched two assists to go with his team-leading 23rd goal for the Rangers, who have lost three in a row by the combined score of 19-6, and have taken numerous bad penalties during the streak. Kevin Weekes stopped 22 shots in the loss.
"We stayed with it and worked our way through it," said a subdued Rangers head coach Tom Renney. "It might not have looked like that but that's where the penalties affected us. I'm not happy with that stuff. Be business-like -- you get a penalty, go to the penalty box -- deal with it. I'm not into that kind of crap."
Facing a 4-2 deficit in the third, the Rangers showed some spirit in front of an impatient home crowd. Jagr collected his second of the game with 8:15 gone, poking home the rebound of Shanahan's right circle drive which trickled behind DiPietro.
Despite outshooting the Islanders 11-6 in the period, they could not net the equalizer down the stretch even with Weekes pulled for an extra attacker.
"There's no question the tradition speaks for itself, every time you play a Ranger-Islander game for some reason the intensity goes up a little bit, and we came out on top tonight," said Blake. "Sometimes you need luck on your side and tonight was a great team win, and you gotta forget about it and we have a tough game in Carolina on Friday."
The Blueshirts scored on their initial power play at 8:58 the first, when defenseman Karel Rachunek's wrister sped along the ice and was tipped home by Shanahan, who snuck in down the right wing and redirected the pass through DiPietro's legs.
Blake tied the game 43 seconds later, picking off Jagr's blind neutral zone pass, moving over the blue line, and beating Weekes with a wrister from 40 feet.
He would pick up his second of the night 5:53 into the second with the Isles on a 5-on-3 advantage. Stationed at the right of Weekes, his attempted cross- crease pass intended for Yashin hit Ranger backliner Aaron Ward's stick and deflected into the net.
Blake completed the trifecta at 7:45 when he picked up another power-play tally off a beautiful behind-the-back slot pass by Miroslav Satan.
Yashin completed the burst on a top-shelf wrister from the left faceoff dot at 12:31, and the Islanders led 4-1 on four unanswered goals. However, Jagr got one back on a power play with 41 seconds left in the period, knocking home Straka's blocked shot from the side of the net, and the Rangers headed to the third down by only two.
