NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Edmonton
(Saturday, November 18th)
Final Score: Edmonton 4, Detroit 3 (SO)
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Raffi Torres scored in the seventh round of the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers downed the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, at Rexall Place.
The 13th participant of the shootout, Torres skated in one net, gave two head pumps and slid the disc between the pads of Joey MacDonald. Robert Lang had a chance to extend the shootout, but Dwayne Roloson swallowed up the wrist shot for the win.
Torres also had a goal and an assist in regulation and Roloson stopped 38 shots for the Oilers, who have won three straight and four of their last five games.
Kris Draper, Jiri Hudler and Danny Markov scored for the Red Wings, who have dropped their last two games after a nine-game winning streak.
MacDonald made his first career start in net and stopped 18 shots.
The Oilers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Ryan Smyth grabbed a turnover and from the low left circle fired a pass to the slot, where Shawn Horcoff one-timed it into the right corner of the net just 4:38 in.
The Red Wings tied the game a little less than three minutes later when Henrik Zetterberg sent a pass from the left circle around a defender to Draper, who one-timed it into the glove of Roloson. While Roloson swallowed up the puck with his glove, after a lengthy review it was determined that the glove, with the puck in it, went past the goalline and it was ruled a goal.
Edmonton, though, took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission when Joffrey Lupul had the puck behind the left side of the net and banked it off the back of MacDonald at the 10:46 mark.
Detroit thoroughly controlled the second period and tied the game with a goal by Markov.
Daniel Cleary had the puck behind the net, fought off a defender and rifled a pass to the right circle. Markov corralled the puck and snapped a wrister that tipped off an Oiler stick and into the net at the 5:11 mark.
Detroit outshot Edmonton, 9-3, in the middle stanza.
The Oilers grabbed the lead in the third period when Torres snapped a wrister from the left circle that went between the right arm and body of MacDonald 8:52 in.
The Red Wings pulled their goaltender in the final minute of play and the move paid off. The team put enormous pressure on Edmonton and, after several shots, Cleary fired a pass from the right boards that Hudler deflected in front to tie the game with four seconds to play.
The Oilers host Calgary on Tuesday...The Red Wings return home to host Vancouver on Wednesday...It was the first goal for Markov in 89 games. The last time a shot from him found the back of the net was on March 5, 2004...Also, it was the first goal in 12 games for Horcoff and Torres...Neither team scored on the power play with Edmonton having three chances and Detroit two.
