Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Maxim Afinogenov posted a goal and an assist as the Buffalo Sabres topped the New York Islanders, 3-0, to tie the NHL record for longest winning streak to start a season -- 10 games, set by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1993-94.
The Sabres can break the record against Atlanta in Buffalo on Saturday.
Buffalo attained its first 10-game winning streak since January 4-23, 1984. The Sabres also have a team-record 15 straight regular-season victories, last losing April 7 versus Philadelphia.
Ales Kotalik and Jason Pominville scored for the Sabres, while Ryan Miller blocked all 29 shots he faced for his third career shutout.
Rick DiPietro blocked 24-of-27 shots for the Islanders, who have lost three of four.
Kotalik scored on a slap shot 6:09 into the first on the power play for an early 1-0 Sabres lead.
Afinogenov scored his sixth goal of the year on a breakway. The right winger faked DiPietro to his right and scored stick side 4:12 into the second.
Buffalo also scored on a 3-on-2 breakaway, as Daniel Briere skated down the right side and fed it to Pominville, who knocked the puck in mid-air into the net at 3:27 of the third.
Buffalo finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while New York was 0-for-3.
Buffalo's last road loss was April 1 at Toronto...The Sabres went 4-0 against the Islanders during the 2005-06 season and are 13-8-1 in the past 22 meetings...Buffalo has won three straight and seven of its last 11 at Nassau Coliseum.
