NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Philadelphia

(Tuesday, December 12th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 3, Philadelphia 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Kevin Weekes only needed to make 15 saves to help the New York Rangers to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wachovia Center.

Jarkko Immonen and Matt Cullen each had a goal and an assist and Michael Nylander scored a goal for the Rangers, who have won their last four games.

New York has notched points in 10 of its last 11 games.

R.J. Umberger scored the lone goal and Antero Niittymaki stopped 31 shots for the Flyers, who have dropped four straight and five of their last six contests.

Despite dominating the first period and outshooting the Flyers, 16-7, the Rangers were only able to score one goal and the first period ended at 1-1.

During a scrum in front of the net, Cullen smacked in the loss puck from the right side just 6:56 in.

However, the Flyers immediately responded as Todd Fedoruk circled behind the net and from the right side, sent a pass to the slot where Umberger snapped a one-timer over the glove of Weekes just 25 seconds after the Rangers goal.

Niittymaki made five saves on Jaromir Jagr during the frame. The best save came when he used his glove to deflect a wrist shot by Jagr from the low slot about six minutes in.

Things settled down a bit in the second period. The Rangers still outshot the Flyers, 8-3, and scored the only goal of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the third.

Immonen got the puck down low on the left side of the net and sneaked a weak backhander between the pads of Niittymaki with 4:05 left in the frame for his first goal of the season.

Philadelphia had trouble getting any pressure on the net in the final stanza, but with under five minutes to play Kyle Calder had a golden opportunity to tie the game on a shot from the low right side, but Weekes came up with a kick save.

Moments later, the Rangers skated down the ice on a 2-on-1. Martin Straka slid a pass from the right side to the left and from the low circle, Nylander snapped a shot into the left corner of the net for a 3-1 lead with 4:27 to play.
