NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Columbus

(Friday, November 17th)

Final Score: Colorado 3, Columbus 0

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Peter Budaj stopped 25 shots for his first shutout of the season, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Ossi Vaananen scored his first goal of the year, while Paul Stastny and Marek Svatos also tallied for Colorado, which broke its four-game losing streak.

Fredrik Norrena made 25 saves for Columbus, which has lost four straight games.

The Avs' first goal came at the 7:29 mark thanks to Columbus' sloppy play in its own zone while shorthanded.

Blue Jackets defenseman Anders Eriksson didn't put enough force behind his backhand clearing attempt from the crease, and the puck hit Stastny's stick as the forward was waiting at the edge of the right circle. He took a heartbeat to settle the disc, then fired it to the far side low past Norrena.

Colorado struck two more times in the second.

From a bad Columbus transition in the neutral zone, the Avs rushed the other way over the blue line. Joe Sakic fed linemate Andrew Brunette down the right wing, and Brunette passed behind him to an open man coming in from the point. That trailer, defenseman Vaananen, stepped up and slid a low shot through Norrena's five-hole for a 2-0 advantage at 9:18.

The lead was boosted to 3-0 with 1:32 remaining, as another failed Blue Jackets rush at center ice was picked off by Tyler Arnason, who charged his way up the middle of the ice and fed Svatos, connecting for his fifth of the season by lifting a well-placed wrister under the crossbar.

Budaj then stopped all eight Columbus shots in the final 20 minutes to preserve the win as the Blue Jackets offered little resistance facing a three- goal deficit.
