NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Los Angeles

(Sunday, October 22nd)

Final Score: Anaheim 3, Los Angeles 2 (SO)

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Ryan Getzlaf scored the deciding shootout goal as the Anaheim Ducks rallied to top the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, at the Staples Center.

Ryan Shannon had a goal and an assist and Dustin Penner added a marker for Anaheim, which erased a 2-0 deficit to win its third game in a row.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 29 saves and came up big in the shootout session to help clinch the win.

Lubomir Visnovsky and Michael Cammalleri both lit the lamp for the Kings, who have dropped five of their last six. Mathieu Garon turned away 19 shots in defeat.

Shannon netted his first marker of the season early in the middle frame to cut Anaheim's deficit in half. Todd Marchant corralled a loose puck behind the net and then sent it into the high slot, where Shannon drove it past Garon stick side.

The scoring went silent until late in the third, when a seemingly innocent shot turned into the equalizing goal. Penner flicked a light wrister from the right circle that caromed off Garon's glove, hit off the far post and then trickled just over the line to tie the game at 2-2 with 5:50 on the clock.

After a fruitless overtime, Anaheim's Teemu Selanne and the Kings' Alexander Frolov exchanged tallies to keep the shootout alive. Giguere then stoned Derek Armstrong in the fifth round to set the stage for Getzlaf, who slammed on the breaks as he approached the net, pulled the puck back and then elevated it over a fallen Garon for the win.

The Kings struck 3:55 into the contest to move in front. Anze Kopitar executed a nice give-and-go with Tom Kostopoulos before moving in on net and dishing a cross- crease pass to Visnovsky, who punched it home.

Los Angeles went on the attack again late in the opening stanza, and cashed in when Cammalleri whipped a one-timer from between the circles that sped past Giguere.

Game Notes

The two teams were a combined 0-for-3 on the power play...Anaheim won the season series, 5-3, last season.
