With 12:20 left in the third frame and the game tied, Washington went up 4-3 after Muir tallied just his second goal of the season. The Caps struck first as Ovechkin scored 6:28 into the opening period. From the right circle, Clark fired a shot that Niittymaki stopped but couldn't control. As the puck dribbled to the left of the crease, Ovechkin corralled the disc and fired it into the net for his 18th goal of the season.
Washington tallied a short-handed goal just 1:33 into the second stanza to take a 2-0 lead. Brooks Laich broke up a pass in the neutral zone and skated in on an odd-man rush into the Philadelphia zone. From the lower right circle, Laich unleashed a wrister and the puck trickled through Niittymaki's pads and over the goal line.
A power-play goal at 2:54 of the second got the Flyers on the board. Alexandre Picard's shot from the left side of the cage slipped through the pads of Johnson and with the puck drifting towards the back of the net, Gagne guided the disc over the goal line.
Gagne's second goal of the contest tied the game at 2-2 with 12:13 remaining in the second. From the left circle, Gagne ripped a slap shot over the glove of Johnson on the far side.
It didn't take long for the Caps to regain the lead as Clark netted his 10th goal of the season just 13 seconds later.
With 9:03 to play in the second, a power-play goal by Knuble evened the score at 3-3. The reliable winger gathered a rebound in the slot and fired it past Johnson high on the glove side.
