NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at Tampa Bay
(Thursday, December 7th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 8, Atlanta 0
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Vincent Lecavalier notched the fourth hat trick of his career and added two assists as the Tampa Bay Lightning continued to be a thorn in the side of Atlanta this season with an 8-0 victory over the Thrashers at St. Pete Times Forum.
Martin St.Louis had a goal and four assists and Dan Boyle and Brad Richards each added a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
"There are some nights you play unbelievable and nothing's going in and tonight it seemed everytime anybody would touch the puck it would go in," said Lecavalier.
Marc Denis only needed to make 21 saves for his first shutout of the season and 16th of his career for Tampa Bay, which has taken four of five games against Atlanta this season. Also, it was Denis' 100th career win.
"I've never been a big shutout guy," said Denis. "It was just nice to get the win."
Kari Lehtonen was peppered for five goals on 30 shots for the Thrashers, who were looking to win their sixth straight, which would have been a franchise record.
"It was a pretty embarrassing loss obviously, we're just going to have to wake up tomorrow and try to forget about it," said Atlanta forward Scott Mellanby.
The Lightning thoroughly dominated the first period, outshooting Atlanta, 12-4, and taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
With time winding down Eric Perrin fired a shot from the inside left circle that an Atlanta player stopped, but the puck laid in the slot and Lecavalier picked it up and fired it into the left corner of the net with 27.6 seconds left.
Tampa Bay grabbed complete control of the game in the second period.
The team ended a power play drought when a one-timer by Lecavalier from the low right circle beat Lehtonen just 6:28 in. Tampa Bay had not scored a power- play goal in its previous 26 chances.
A little less than six minutes later, Lecavalier completed the natural hat trick when he skated into the Atlanta zone, faked a shot and slid the disc between the pads of Lehtonen for his 17th goal of the season.
Just 34 seconds later, Alexeev made it a 4-0 game when he skated down the right wing, made a move to get by the defender and snapped a shot from the low slot into the left corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
The Lightning took a 5-0 lead into the second intermission when, on the power play, Richards' one-timer from the top of the left circle went between the pads of Lehtonen with 5:02 left in the period.
Lehtonen was pulled after the second period and replaced by Johan Hedberg.
A shot by Perrin from the low right side was tipped in by Boyle just 3:26 into the final period.
On a 2-on-1 rush, Lecavalier fed the disc from the low left side to the right side where St. Louis slammed it into the net at the 6:30 mark.
Ruslan Fedotenko continued the onslaught when he snapped a shot from the right side over the glove of Hedberg at the 9:12 mark.
