NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at NY Rangers

(Monday, October 16th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 4, New Jersey 2

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Brendan Shanahan and Jason Ward both scored late second-period goals to lift the New York Rangers past the New Jersey Devils, 4-2, at Madison Square Garden.

Aaron Ward and Martin Straka also scored for the Rangers, who snapped a three- game losing streak. Jaromir Jagr and Michael Nylander each had an assist and have helpers in each of New York's first six games.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 34 shots in the win, which was the Rangers' fourth in their last six games against the Devils at Madison Square Garden.

"What I needed to do was to stay back a little more, play deeper," said Lundqvist. "I felt like I was square to the puck all the time."

Scott Gomez and Travis Zajac both scored for the Devils, who had a modest two- game winning streak halted. Martin Brodeur was tagged for four goals on 29 shots faced.

"Give them credit, they played a great game, they stuck to their game plan," Gomez said. "We had the momentum. It just shows you what could happen, especially on the road."

The Rangers took a 3-1 lead before the end of the second period with a pair of goals in a 57-second span.

First, New York took a one-goal edge after Shanahan beat Brodeur with a blistering slapper from the top of the left circle with 1:31 left while on the power play.

It was the Rangers' only power play of the game and gave Shanahan a goal in four straight games.

New Jersey's Ryan Hollweg was called for boarding with 1:12 to go, putting the Rangers down a man, but Jason Ward and Matt Cullen broke out on a 2-on-1 break and Cullen's shot was stopped by Brodeur.

However, Ward was there to put the rebound in off the bottom of the crossbar to send the Rangers into the break with a two-goal edge.

"You just can't play from behind every single night and have these kind of performances," Brodeur said. "We have to start getting better 60-minute performances."

Zajac pulled the Devils to within 3-2 when his slap shot from the right circle beat Lundqvist 1:37 into the third period.

New York, though, iced the game with 3:18 left in the third. After a Devils turnover in their own zone, Jagr sent a pass wide of the net. Nylander corralled the rebound and sent a pass to a wide open Straka, who redirected the pass into the net from the left side of the cage.

After a scoreless first period, New York netted the game's first goal 8:24 into the second. Brodeur tried to clear the puck from behind his own net around the right boards, but the disc went right to Aaron Ward. Ward then slapped a bouncing puck over Brodeur's right shoulder for a 1-0 lead.

New Jersey answered just 35 seconds later. Brian Gionta's backhander from the left circle was stopped by Lundqvist. However, the puck ended up behind the Rangers netminder and Gomez took two whacks at the disc in the crease before tying the game at 1-1.
