NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Nashville
(Saturday, November 11th)
Final Score: Nashville 1, Colorado 0
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Chris Mason stopped 42 shots for his fourth career shutout, as the Nashville Predators hung on for a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
Scott Upshall provided the only marker, while Marek Zidlicky and Kimmo Timmonen picked up assists for the Predators, who have won six of seven games.
Jose Theodore stopped 30 shots in a valiant effort for the Avalanche, losers in three of their last four contests.
Nashville opened the scoring at the 9:35 mark of the first, on a goal Theodore would love to have back.
Upshall streaked down the left wing side, and unleashed a slap shot from 40 feet that handcuffed the Avs netminder. The puck ticked off Theodore's glove as he reached out to grab the shot, and fell between his arm and body into the net.
With the score still 1-0, Avalanche forward Ian Laperriere tried to stir up some emotion for his team in a second-period bout with Nashville's Shea Weber. While the tussle did create more urgency and emotion, it did not result in better marksmanship from Joel Quenneville's club.
From that point on, the game developed into a goaltending duel as neither Theodore nor Mason faltered when both teams came at each other in waves.
Theodore dove to stop point-blank chances from J.P. Dumont and Scott Hartnell, then turned aside a wicked shot from Jason Arnott. Mason answered with superb stops on Patrice Brisebois, Andrew Brunette and a searing blast from Milan Hejduk.
Mason was tested thoroughly in the final 20 minutes, and stood up to each of the Avalanche's 19 shots. He made kick-saves on a Ken Klee point blast midway through the period, and on a Hejduk tip with four minutes left.
Even with Nashville down a man through the final 1:31, Mason would not be denied. He absolutely robbed Wojtek Wolski on a tip chance from the top of the crease with a minute to go, and smothered two more stuffers from a goalmouth scramble seconds later. Mason completed the night by halting a Paul Stastny wrister from the slot with 54 seconds left.
The Predators have won seven of their last eight games over Colorado...Each of Nashville's wins against the Avalanche have come by one-goal....The Avs went 0-of-7, and Predators 0-of-2 with the man advantage.
