NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Atlanta
(Friday, November 10th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 5, Atlanta 2
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Michael Nylander notched two goals and an assist to lead the New York Rangers to a 5-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.
Jaromir Jagr had three assists and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 28 shots for the Rangers, who have won two straight and four of their last five contests.
"I would say this is certainly one of our best efforts of the season," said Rangers coach Tom Renney. "We seem to rise to the occasion against teams like this."
Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist and Kari Lehtonen, making his first start in five games, was shelled for five goals on 25 shots for the Thrashers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.
"You have some team wins and tonight it was a team loss," said Atlanta coach Bob Hartley. "I don't think anyone can leave this building happy. We're a better team than what showed tonight."
The Rangers scored just 15 second into the game for a 1-0 lead. A turnover behind the net resulted in Jagr getting the puck at the left circle. Jagr chipped a pass over to the slot where Nylander one-timed it between the pads of Lehtonen.
On the power play, Jagr sent a pass from the right circle to the inside of the left circle where Michal Rozsival one-timed it into the left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead 6:17 into the first.
The Rangers continued the onslaught and assumed a 3-0 lead on a one-timer between the pads of Lehtonen from Brendan Shanahan with 5:32 to play.
Atlanta, though, got on the scoreboard late in the first when a one-timer by Slava Kozlov from the right point found the back of the net with 2:49 left in the first.
New York took a 4-1 lead halfway through the second. Lehtonen attempted to play the puck behind his net, but whiffed on the clearing attempt. Matt Cullen grabbed the puck and centered it to Petr Prucha, who one-timed it past an out- of-position Lehtonen.
"I did a couple of bad things tonight," said Lehtonen.
However, the Thrashers used a 5-on-3 power play to make it a 4-2 game. Kovalchuk received a pass in the slot and one-timed it into the right corner with 5:53 left in the second.
New York grabbed a three-goal lead 8:55 into the third when Nylander scored his second goal of the game on a slam dunk shot from the right side of the net.
