NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Vancouver
(Thursday, November 9th)
Final Score: Anaheim 6, Vancouver 0
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 20 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Anaheim Ducks set a new record by earning points in 16 consecutive games to start the season with a 6-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks at General Motors Place.
The Ducks, who are 12-0-4 this season, have posted the longest point streak to begin an NHL season. The Edmonton Oilers set the previous NHL record by gathering points in their first 15 games to start the 1984-85 season.
"I felt good out there," said Giguere. "I was seeing the puck real well and my focus was pretty good. When guys score six goals, it makes it much easier."
Ryan Getzlaf scored two goals and Shane O'Brien added a goal and two assists for the Ducks, who have defeated the Canucks in the past four matchups, outscoring them 19-5.
Roberto Luongo let in three goals on nine shots before being pulled early in the second period for the Canucks, who have lost four of their last five games. Dany Sabourin played the rest of the game in net and stopped 15-of-18 shots.
"It was obviously our worst effort of the year," said Vancouver's Markus Naslund. "We can't make any excuses. We didn't come out with the intensity we need to even have a chance to play with these guys. We came out totally flat and it's inexcusable."
The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the first period.
O'Brien had the puck at the left point and threw a shot on net that went off the skate of Vancouver winger Matt Cooke and into the net 5:34 into the game.
Later in the period Chris Kunitz skated the puck to the right side and tried to center the puck, but it went off a defenseman. However, the puck bounded back to Kunitz and he backhanded it past Luongo with 4:34 left in the period.
Anaheim grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second period thanks to good hustling by Rob Niedermayer. He beat out an icing and from the right corner fed the puck to Samuel Pahlsson, who wristed it over the glove of Luongo 5:33 in.
Luongo was pulled from the net after the goal and replaced by Sabourin.
The Canucks had a good opportunity to get on the scoreboard later in the period when they had 49 seconds of 5-on-3 play, but they never got setup in the zone.
The Ducks made it a 4-0 game in the third when Scott Thornton skated into the Vancouver zone on a 2-on-1 rush and from the right circle dished it over to the left circle where Getzlaf tapped it into the net 3:21 in.
Todd Marchant banged in a rebound off a Chris Pronger shot with 10:15 to play and Getzlaf redirected a O'Brien left point shot with 8:20 to play to complete the scoring.
Anaheim travels to Calgary for a game on Friday...Vancouver hosts Calgary on Saturday...Giguere has 23 shutouts in his career...Neither team scored on the power play with Anaheim having seven chances and Vancouver five...Thornton had two assists in the game.
