NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Detroit
(Wednesday, November 8th)
Final Score: Detroit 3, Edmonton 0
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg scored a short-handed goal and Dominik Hasek stopped all 16 shots he faced as the red-hot Detroit Red Wings dominated the Edmonton Oilers in a 3-0 victory.
Daniel Cleary and Jiri Hudler also scored, while Chris Chelios had two helpers for the Red Wings, who won for the seventh time in a row.
The Red Wings did receive a scare in the second period as center Jason Williams was carted off the ice on a stretcher after he was leveled by Edmonton forward Raffi Torres.
It appeared to be a clean hit, as Torres' shoulder made direct contact with Williams' head.
The 26-year-old Williams lay motionless in the corner with a large cut above his left eye before he was taken off the ice. However, he was conscious leaving the ice and he was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons.
Goaltender Dwayne Roloson played admirably for the slumping Oilers, finishing the game with 42 saves. Edmonton has now lost four in a row.
Detroit dominated the Oilers from start to finish, outshooting Edmonton 45-16, including 14-0 in the first period.
However, the Red Wings weren't able to get on the scoreboard until 1:55 into the second period on Cleary's third goal of the season.
Kirk Maltby fired a shot on the net from the point that Cleary managed to get a stick on and redirect past Roloson for the first score.
Detroit then took advantage of an Edmonton miscue 2:57 into the final period to double its lead.
The Oilers turned the puck over on their own power play and Zetterberg slipped the disc inside the left post to make it 2-0.
The Red Wings then scored a power play goal with 4:32 left to play to ice the game.
Chelios banked a shot off the backboards that went out to Pavel Datsyuk, who poked a shot on the net. Roloson managed to get a stick on the initial shot, but the puck squirted in front to Hudler, who had an open net for the goal.
Zetterberg has scored more goals against Roloson than any other goaltender he has faced (five goals in regulation and six in the playoffs)...Detroit went 1- for-7 on the power play, while Edmonton squandered six opportunities with the man-advantage...The last time the Oilers failed to record a shot in a period was February 16, 2004 in the second period of a game against Detroit. It was also the last time the Red Wings held an opponent shot-less in a period.
