NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Phoenix

(Tuesday, January 31st)

Final Score: Vancouver 7, Phoenix 4

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Henrik Sedin scored a goal and added three assists as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 7-4, at Glendale Arena.

Markus Naslund returned to the lineup and scored for Vancouver after missing one game with hip and groin injuries.

Daniel Sedin added a goal and an assist while Alex Auld made 42 saves for the Canucks, who have won their last two games.

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who have dropped their past two games.

Boyd Devereaux notched two assists while Curtis Joseph allowed five goals on 19 shots before being replaced by Brian Boucher at the start of the third period. Boucher finished with five saves on six shots.

"A win is a win, I guess that is the most important thing," said Auld. "We kind of let them back in it there and we have to learn from that."

The Canucks jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Daniel Sedin scored at 12:29 of the first period. Twin brother Henrik sent a wrister from the high slot that Joseph stopped, but Daniel was able to whack home the rebound in front.

Josh Green made it 2-0 just 37 seconds later with his third goal of the season.

Phoenix pulled to within one with only 39 ticks left in the opening period as Dave Scatchard gathered a loose puck in front and chipped it past Auld short side.

The Canucks netted two goals early in the second stanza to take a 4-1 lead. Henrik Sedin scored at 5:57 of the period and Tyler Bouck tallied his first goal of the season on a breakaway a little over two minutes later.

The Coyotes responded with two consecutive goals of their own to make it a 4-3 game in the second period. At the 14:24 mark, Doan fired a wrister from the high slot that beat Auld on the power play. About two minutes later, Mike Comrie backhanded a rebound at the right side of the net over a sprawled out Auld for his 18th goal of the season.

On the power play, Mattias Ohlund put the Canucks up 5-3 with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that sailed high glove side past Joseph with 1:31 left in the second period.

Naslund pushed the Vancouver lead to 6-3 about five minutes into the final frame with his 24th goal of the season.

Midway through the third period, Mike Ricci made it a 6-4 game with a power- play goal.

Todd Bertuzzi made it 7-4 on an empty netter with a 1:27 to play in the game.

"We have to be better than we were today," said Vancouver head coach Marc Crawford. "We took too many dumb penalties. We keep doing that; we keep giving teams a chance to get back in games."
