NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Washington

(Sunday, January 29th)

Final Score: Washington 2, Tampa Bay 1

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Dainius Zubrus tallied the game-winning goal late in the third period as the Washington Capitals edged the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2-1, at the MCI Center.

Olaf Kolzig was brilliant in net with 34 saves for the Capitals, who put an end to a three-game losing streak.

Jeff Halpern scored the other goal for Washington, while rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin picked up his 31st assist of the season.

Vincent Lecavalier netted the lone goal for the Lightning, who lost for only the second time in the past seven games overall.

John Grahame got the start in net for Tampa Bay and allowed two goals on 24 shots.

With the game tied up at 1-1 late in the final frame, Zubrus' goal put Washington ahead at 2-1. Alexander Ovechkin sent a pass from the left boards over to Chris Clark at the right circle. Clarke dished the puck to Zubrus in the slot and he roofed it into the top right corner of the net with only 2:20 left in the game.

The Lightning pulled Grahame with about a minute left, but could not net the equalizer.

After a scoreless opening period, Tampa Bay took a 1-0 lead midway through the second stanza after Lecavalier scored his 21st of the season. Vaclav Prospal sent a pass from the right corner out in the slot to Lecavalier, who one-timed the puck past Kolzig.

At the 16:20 mark of the second, the Capitals tied it up at 1-1 with Halpern's fourth goal of the season. Brian Willsie's shot from the right circle was stopped by Grahame, but the puck slipped through his pads and after two whacks, Halpern slammed the loose disc home.
