NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Columbus
(Friday, January 27th)
Final Score: Columbus 4, Minnesota 3
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Sergei Fedorov tallied the game-winning score off a defensive mistake by Minnesota and the Columbus Blue Jackets rallied for three goals in the third frame to down the Wild, 4-3, at Nationwide Arena.
Rick Nash netted the tying goal and Bryan Berard and Ron Hainsey also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won five of their last seven games. Fedorov assisted on Nash's goal and Pascal Leclaire made 25 saves in the win.
"We came back and battled back, it was great," said Leclaire. "We have found a way to win again, so it was good."
Todd White scored a pair of goals, but it wasn't enough as the Wild saw their five-game winning streak come to a halt. Pierre-Marc Bouchard added a goal in the loss.
Columbus trailed 3-2 midway through the third, but used a goal of skill and a goal of luck to clinch the victory.
Nash's 13th goal of the season tied the game as he made a nice deflection in front off an Adam Foote shot from the slot to tie the contest at 3-3 at the 10:37 mark of the third. The goal was reviewed to see if Nash's stick was above the crossbar, but the score stood.
"I went to the net and I saw the puck coming," said Nash. "I just wanted to make it change directions and lucky enough, it hit my stick."
A poor defensive play by Minnesota's Nick Schultz allowed the Blue Jackets to take a 4-3 lead. Fedorov carried the puck into the zone along the left side before shoveling the disc in front of the net. Schultz was the only one there and the defender tried to redirect the puck into the corner, but the puck sailed into his own net with 6:33 remaining.
"I think a goal is a goal," said Fedorov. "It was a dangerous situation for the defenseman."
Nash had an opportunity to put Columbus ahead by two with 4:33 left in the game with a breakaway chance, but was stopped stick side by Dwayne Roloson, who finished with 21 saves in defeat.
After a scoreless first frame, Hainsey's first goal of the season put Columbus on the board as he ripped a one-timer that rang off the right post and into the net 4:25 into the second.
The Wild answered with three straight goals.
A power-play tally by Bouchard tied the contest at 1-1 at 8:50 of the second. The puck hit off of Bouchard's skate in the crease as the forward crashed the net to pickup his ninth goal of the year.
A pair of scores by White staked Minnesota to a two-goal edge. White picked up his 14th goal of the season on a deflection from in front at the 10:48 mark and less than three minutes later, White fired home a loose puck from the left slot on a power play for a 3-1 Wild lead.
Berard's 12th goal of the season, also a power-play tally, pulled the Blue Jackets to within one just 2:24 into the third. During a 5-on-3 advantage, Berard took a feed at the low point from Nikolai Zherdev and the defenseman converted the pass into a one-time goal that beat Roloson glove side through traffic.
Berard's 12th goal set a franchise record for goals by a defenseman... Minnesota finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Blue Jackets were 1- for-9...The Wild's Brian Rolston had two assists in the game giving him 32 on the year. He has six assists in his last six games...Fedorov's assist was his 18th of the season...Columbus has won its last three home games...The Wild had won their last two road games.
