NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at San Jose
(Thursday, January 26th)
Final Score: Anaheim 2, San Jose 0
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Ilya Bryzgalov turned aside 24 shots to record his first career NHL shutout and lift the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim past the San Jose Sharks, 2-0, at the HP Pavilion.
Andy McDonald and Joffrey Lupul both scored for the Ducks, who snapped a modest two-game losing streak. Teemu Selanne assisted on both goals.
However, it was Bryzgalov who stole the show as the netminder turned aside 10 shots through two periods before stopping all 14 shots he faced in the third frame.
"Today I got a shutout but I want to say the team played unbelievable today on the offensive end and in the defensive zone," said Bryzgalov. "Two periods they don't give any chance to San Jose and the third period we played a 5-on-3 and San Jose can't score a goal on two breakaways and that's it. I thought we played really well."
Evgeni Nabokov made 30 saves for the Sharks, who had won their last two games. Jonathan Cheechoo was kept off the score sheet for the first time in 13 games. The forward had recorded 10 goals and nine assists in his last 12 contests.
"It comes out of nowhere, that was just a collective dud, exception for Nabokov," Sharks head coach Ron Wilson said. "It was one his better efforts of this year, he was on top of his game and we wasted it."
After a scoreless first period, Anaheim netted the game's first goal late in the second.
After a steal in their own zone, the Mighty Ducks broke out as Selanne carried the puck up the ice. The forward sent a pass along the blue line to Keith Carney, who then fired a pass to McDonald in the slot. The center redirected the disc through Nabokov's five hole with 2:51 remaining until the second intermission.
Anaheim extended its lead to 2-0 on the power play 2:30 into the third. Selanne gathered the puck along the left side before skating towards the net. He then slid a pass across the slot that Lupul tipped into an open net.
San Jose had a 5-on-3 power play early in the third as the Sharks tried to get back within one. Cheechoo had the best chance to net a goal, but Bryzgalov stopped both his in-close shot and rebound attempt.
Midway through the third, Bryzgalov made two big saves on San Jose's Milan Michalek, one on a breakaway and one on a power play, to maintain the two-goal lead.
The Sharks pulled Nabokov with around two minutes left to play, but still could not deny Bryzgalov the shutout.
