(Thursday, January 26th)
Final Score: Minnesota 5, Nashville 1
St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Manny Fernandez stopped 32 of the 33 shots he faced to lead the Minnesota Wild past the Nashville Predators, 5-1, at Xcel Energy Center.
Alexandre Daigle and Stephane Veilleux each had a goal and an assist for the Wild, who are on a franchise-best five-game winning streak.
Greg Johnson notched the lone goal for the Predators, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Chris Mason made 22 saves in the loss.
The Wild got on the board first with a lucky break. Marc Chouinard snapped a wrister from the right circle that was going well wide of the net, but the puck hit Veilleux in the back of the leg and went into the net almost halfway through the first period.
Daigle made it a 2-0 game on a nice individual effort. He had the puck along the left point, stickhandled past a Nashville player and from the low slot flicked a wrister that beat Mason over the glove with 3:32 left in the first 20 minutes.
Nashville got one back after Johnson forced a turnover in his own zone, skated the puck down the ice and snapped a wrister from the right circle that beat Fernandez for a shorthanded marker 4:56 into the second.
The Predators had a golden opportunity to tie the game up when two Wild players were called for minors, giving Nashville a two-minute 5-on-3.
However, the Wild killed the penalty and shortly after that Pierre-Marc Bouchard blasted a shot from the top right circle into the net to give the Wild a 3-1 lead with 2:14 left until the second intermission.
"It's not just me," said Fernandez of the teams play. "That's confidence as a group. Our penalty killing tonight was amazing. From the beginning to the end we played as a team. We are playing our game. We are so hungry on the penalty kill and we got the team where we want to be."
Minnesota iced the game with two goals separated by 43 seconds in the third period.
Brian Rolston snapped a wrister from the left circle that Mason made a save on, however, Todd White poked in the rebound from in front of the net for his 13th goal of the season 6:13 in. Shortly after, Marian Gaborik snapped a one- timer in the slot on a pass from Randy Robitaille to give the squad a 5-1 lead.
