NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at St. Louis

(Monday, January 23rd)

Final Score: St. Louis 4, Vancouver 0

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Curtis Sanford stopped 34 shots for his third shutout of the season to lead St. Louis to a 4-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at the Savvis Center.

Christian Backman had a goal and an assist and Mike Sillinger, Vladimir Orszagh, and Petr Cajanek scored for the Blues, who snapped a nine-game losing streak.

Maxime Ouellet stopped 19-of-22 shots for the Canucks, who had a four-game winning streak stopped.

The Blues got on the board late in the first period with a power-play tally. Scott Young had the puck high in the slot and let fly with a blast that was tipped by Sillinger in front of the net with 3:36 remaining.

St. Louis took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission on a late goal. Kevin Dallman brought the puck into the Vancouver zone and from the left point sent it to Orszagh in the slot. Orszagh let fly with a quick shot that went through Ouellet's five-hole with 2:54 left in the second.

The Blues had to kill a power play that ran from the end of the second to the beginning of the third. As the penalty expired Dallas Drake hit Backman coming out of the box and he went into the Vancouver zone alone. Backman went to the backhand and flipped the puck over Ouellet's left pad to make it a 3-0 St. Louis lead 1:38 into the final stanza.

"That's what you're hoping for every time in the box," said Backman about the goal. "I had alot of time to think about what to do. I don't want to shoot too much. I tried a move and it was successful."

Vancouver was unable to figure out Sanford and pulled its goaltender with over two minutes to play to try and generate some offense. But Cajanek put in an empty-net goal with 40 seconds remaining to seal the win for St. Louis.
