NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Pittsburgh

(Thursday, December 29th)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, New Jersey 2

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist, as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the New Jersey Devils, 6-2, at Mellon Arena.

Tomas Surovy added two goals and Marc Andre-Fleury stopped 44 shots for Pittsburgh, which put an end to a six-game losing streak.

Scott Gomez scored two goals and Scott Clemmensen saved 19-of-25 shots for New Jersey, which has lost four of its last five games.

The Penguins opened the scoring when Ric Jackman connected for his fifth goal of the season, a power-play score 5:42 into the first period. Dick Tarnstrom fed a pass to Jackman, who shot the one-timer from the left circle past Clemmensen.

Brian Gionta had a chance to tie the game with under three minutes left in the first after receiving a short-handed breakaway pass, but he couldn't get the puck past Fleury.

Moments later Pittsburgh extended its lead to 2-0, as Crosby redirected a Tarnstrom wrister from between the circles with 1:47 left in the opening 20 minutes.

Surovy scored the third goal of the game for the Penguins, as he received a pass from Ziggy Palffy on a give-and-go and scooted the puck through Clemmensen's five-hole.

Mark Recchi tallied his 11th goal of the season, as he took a pass from Shane Endicott through the crease and put the puck in the net off of Clemmensen's skate to increase the Pittsburgh lead to 4-0.

"We had a great start the first half of the game," said coach Michel Therrien. "We followed the plan really well. It's a tough league to have a four-goal lead because sometimes you loose your concentration, and the other team is taking a lot of chances."

The Devils scored their first goal of the game with a two-man advantage 12:28 in to the second period, as Gomez stuffed the puck past Fleury for his 10th goal of the season.

New Jersey cut the deficit to 4-2 as Zach Parise worked the give-and-go with Gomez, who scored his second goal of the game past the left skate of Fleury with 16:47 left in the game.

The Penguins regained their three-goal edge 6:05 into the final stanza, as Surovy notched his second goal of the game.

Crosby scored his second goal of the game when Palffy fed him a pass and the phenom put the puck in the net past the sprawled out Clemmensen to make the score 6-2 with 5:53 remaining in the contest.
