NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Dallas
(Tuesday, December 27th)
Final Score: Detroit 4, Dallas 1
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and two assists to lead the Detroit Red Wings over the Dallas Stars, 4-1, at AmericanAirlines Center.
Mikael Samuelsson, Brett Lebda and Kirk Maltby all scored for the Red Wings, who have won their last four games.
Chris Osgood made 27 saves in the victory for Detroit, which have not lost to Dallas since January 16, 2002, a span of nine games in which they have four wins and five ties.
Jaroslav Svoboda scored the lone goal for the Stars, who have lost two of their last three games. Marty Turco, who sat out Monday's game against the Blues with the flu, made 19 saves in the loss.
The Red Wings drew first blood in the game thanks to a Stars turnover. Turco had the puck behind the net, but was harassed by a Red Wing and quickly tried to clear it. However, the puck went to Zetterberg at the right circle and he immediately fired a pass to Samuelsson at the left side of the net, and he one-timed it in at the 8:34 mark of the first period.
However, the Stars evened the score before the first intermission. Niklas Hagman dumped the puck into the Detroit zone and hustled between two defenders to get it deep along the right boards. He made a pass from his knees to Svoboda in the slot, who fired a one-timer that beat Osgood with 3:11 left in the opening period.
"We were up against the top team in the Western Conference and we look at them as a measuring stick for us," said Stars coach Dave Tippett. "We didn't get the result we wanted, but that just shows us that we still have some work to do."
Detroit scored the only goal of the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the final 20 minutes. In a scrum along the right boards Jason Williams got the puck and passed it to Zetterberg in the slot, who redirected the puck into the net at the 4:14 mark of the stanza.
The Red Wings increased their lead to 3-1 on a goal by Lebda. Zetterberg sent a pass from the right circle that deflected off of Lebda's stick between Turco's five hole at the 8:34 mark of the final 20 minutes.
Dallas pulled its goaltender in the final minute, but Maltby put in an empty- net goal and Detroit left the building with the victory.
