NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Phoenix
(Thursday, December 22nd)
Final Score: Phoenix 2, San Jose 1
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mike Comrie recorded the go-ahead goal early in the third period and Curtis Joseph made 20 saves as Phoenix edged San Jose, 2-1, at Glendale Arena.
Jamie Lundmark also scored for the Coyotes, who put an end to a four-game losing streak and got their first win in their third try for acting head coach Rick Tocchet.
Tocchet continues to lead the Coyotes in the absence of Wayne Gretzky, who left the club over the weekend to attend to his ailing mother. Phyllis Gretzky passed away Monday after a bout with lung cancer.
The victory came at the expense of one of the NHL's hottest clubs, as the Sharks had won seven of eight coming in. Patrick Marleau netted San Jose's lone goal.
Sharks center Joe Thornton had a 14-game point streak come to an end and failed to register one since being acquired from Boston on November 30.
The teams were tied 1-1 after two periods, but the Sharks put themselves in a bind with two quick penalties early in the third.
Phoenix took advantage of the 5-on-3 situation. Paul Mara sent a shot from the point that was saved by Evgeni Nabokov, who then blocked Ladislav Nagy's attempt on the rebound. However, Comrie was able to stuff the puck through a scrum in front of the net at 2:52 of the session.
The Coyotes had a goal disallowed later on when Mike Ricci deliberately kicked in a backhanded feed from Boyd Devereaux.
San Jose had three power-play opportunities following Comrie's tally, but Joseph was up to the task on each one.
Both teams found the net once in the opening period, with the Sharks drawing first blood.
Marleau stole the puck from Sean O'Donnell in the Phoenix zone, skated out to center, and fired a wrister over Joseph's shoulder just 1:31 into the contest.
Phoenix would pull even on the power play, as Lundmark corralled Derek Morris' pass from the right point and slipped a shot past Nabokov's left skate with 8:08 remaining in the frame.
Nabokov finished with 24 saves.
