NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Chicago
(Wednesday, December 21st)
Final Score: Nashville 6, Chicago 1
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Paul Kariya scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Nashville Predators rolled past the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-1, at United Center.
Ryan Suter, Steve Sullivan and Yanic Perreault each added a goal and an assist for the Predators, who won their fourth straight game. Vernon Fiddler also scored and Jordin Tootoo contributed a pair of assists in the win.
Chris Mason stopped 26-of-27 shots faced in the win as Nashville snapped a two-game road losing streak.
"It was a good win for us," said Kariya. "The Hawks were aggressive at the start, but we are getting a lot of different scoring from different guys."
Matthew Barnaby netted the lone goal for the Blackhawks, who lost for the fourth time in their last five games. Nikolai Khabibulin allowed four goals on just 12 shots faced before being pulled in the second period.
His replacement, Craig Anderson, stopped 17-of-19 shots faced as the Blackhawks lost for only the second time in their last seven games (5-2-0) in Chicago against Nashville.
"Obviously, we wanted a better effort and we wanted to play smarter," said Chicago forward Martin Lapointe. "We need to go back to basics and play a simpler game. Frustration is a big factor and hard to control, but we have to find a way."
Nashville took a 1-0 lead after Suter's first career goal. Jerred Smithson won an offensive faceoff draw and got the puck back to Suter, who fired a quick shot past Khabibulin at the 13:22 mark of the first.
"I had 70 people here tonight," said Suter. "I just closed my eyes and shot. It was a great feeling." Among those in attendance were Suter's father, Bob, and uncle, Gary, a former Blackhawk. Bob Suter was a member of the United State's 1980 Olympic hockey team that captured a gold medal.
Chicago responded however just 41 seconds later after Barnaby gathered the puck in the slot and ripped a shot that beat Mason high glove side for a 1-1 tie.
The Predators netted the go-ahead goal before the end of the first. Perreault scored the tally as he carried the puck into the offensive zone along the right boards and lifted a shot high over Khabibulin's shoulder with 1:14 left.
Sullivan and Fiddler tallied two second-period goals to extend the Predators lead to a comfortable 4-1 edge heading into the third.
Sullivan's tally came 2:10 into the frame on the power play and Fiddler's goal found the back of the net at the 8:08 mark of the stanza for the three- goal edge.
Fiddler's tally chased Khabibulin from the game as Anderson came on in relief. Anderson stopped all eight shots he saw through the rest of the middle frame. Khabibulin, meanwhile, failed to stop the only two shots he faced in the second.
Kariya's 11th goal of the season 5:08 into the third extended Nashville to a 5-1 edge and the forward netted his second goal of the game on a five-on-three power play with 3:49 left in the contest. The tally came from the right side of the net after Kariya lifted a Sullivan pass over Anderson's left pad to cap the scoring.
