NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at NY Islanders

(Wednesday, December 21st)

Final Score: NY Islanders 4, New Jersey 2

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Trent Hunter scored a pair of goals to lead the New York Islanders past the New Jersey Devils, 4-2, at Nassau Coliseum.

Mike York added a goal and two assists for the Islanders, who won for the third time in their last five games. Jason Blake had a goal and an assist in the win while Rick DiPietro made 25 saves.

Zach Parise and Paul Martin both scored for the Devils, losers in seven of their last nine games. Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez each picked up their 16th assists of the season in the loss.

Martin Brodeur allowed four goals on 31 shots faced for New Jersey.

Blake staked the Islanders to an early 1-0 edge after converting a turnover in the offensive zone. The scoring chance began after Devils defenseman Sean Brown fumbled the puck in front of his own net. Blake stripped Brown of the puck and found himself uncontested in the slot and the center's ensuing shot beat Brodeur glove side just 2:49 into the game.

New Jersey would net a game-tying goal midway through the second. After an Islander chance at the other end, Parise took a pass from Gionta and skated into the offensive zone. Parise then cut into the slot and backhanded a shot under DiPietro's stick as the netminder tried a poke check at the 7:42 mark of the second.

New York answered right back just 22 seconds later. Hunter sent the puck towards the net and the puck was scooped up by a Devil defenseman. However, the resulting pass was stolen by York, who then sent a shot from the slot over Brodeur's shoulder for a 2-1 New York edge.

Hunter's power-play goal 4:40 into the third increased the Islanders' lead to two goals. The tally came after Hunter took a behind-the-net feed from Jeff Hamilton at the right side and the forward was able to stuff the puck into the net for the tally.

A Devils power-play goal would make it a 3-2 deficit at the 9:52 mark of the third. With Miroslav Satan off for high-sticking, Martin found the puck in the left circle and fired a shot that sailed past DiPietro's glove and into the net.

The Devils finished 1-for-8 on the power play and now have just two goals in their last 48 power-play chances and three tallies in their last 85 power plays.

The Islanders, though, would not let the game slip away as Hunter's second goal of the contest put New York back up by two with 5:09 left to play. Right as an Islander power play expired, Blake took the puck along the left side and carried it all the way around the net into the right circle.

He then whipped a cross-ice pass to Hunter in the left circle, who blasted a shot past Brodeur's glove as the netminder was moving towards his stick side.
