NHL Game Summary - Boston at Calgary
(Saturday, December 17th)
Final Score: Calgary 3, Boston 0
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Dion Phaneuf, Tony Amonte and Stephane Yelle scored less than two minutes apart early in the first period, while Miikka Kiprusoff turned aside 26 shots for his fifth shutout of the season as the Calgary Flames beat the Boston Bruins, 3-0, at the Saddledome.
Kiprusoff stopped nine shots in each of the first two periods and eight more in the third for his 12th career shutout.
The Flames have won three straight contests and five of six.
The news wasn't all good for the Flames, though. Yelle hurt his left ankle in the first period. He was wearing a walking cast by the end of the game and was sent to the hospital for further examination.
Andrew Raycroft made 26 saves for Boston, which missed on five power-play chances and lost for the fourth time in five games.
Phaneuf, Amonte and Yelle lit the lamp 1:51 apart. Phaneuf was first to score, as the Flames took advantage of a power play. He wristed the puck from just inside the blue line past a surprised Raycroft 3:05 into the contest.
Amonte recorded the 401st goal of his career just 51 seconds later when he took a pass from Matthew Lombardi and deposited the puck from the right side of the net past Raycroft.
"It was key to come out strong and for (Boston) not to get ahead," Lombardi said. "Shutting down them from there was the game plan."
Yelle then scored on a shorthanded breakaway a minute later, beating Raycroft low to the stick side. The goal came while Steven Reinprecht was in the penalty box for hooking.
"We played hard and we have to take that as a positive," Raycroft said. "I'd like to make one of those saves at the start and it probably would have changed the outcome a bit, but it wasn't a lack of trying. I think I played real well, but we have to find a way to put the puck in the net."
Kiprusoff was spectacular. He stopped P.J. Axelsson on a breakaway with just under five minutes left in the second period, and moments later denied Brian Leetch on an attempt from in close.
