Final Score: Carolina 3, Los Angeles 2
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Erik Cole scored two goals and Martin Gerber made 35 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, at Staples Center.
Justin Williams added his 12th tally of the season and Eric Staal notched his 21st assist for Carolina, which has won two straight.
Jeff Cowan and Eric Belanger both notched goals and Mathieu Garon stopped 19- of-22 shots for the Kings, who have lost four of their last five contests.
Carolina got on the scoreboard midway through the first period while on the power play after Cole beat Garon glove side with a slap shot from the top of the right circle for a 1-0 lead.
The Hurricanes extended their advantage to 2-0 with 6:01 left in the first period after Williams redirected a puck out of mid-air past Garon. Mike Commodore blasted a slap shot from the high slot that caromed off of a Kings defenseman before Williams batted it past Garon.
Carolina made it 3-0 at 6:52 of the second period after Cole got behind the Kings' defense and swept the puck just past Garon's right pad for his second tally of the game.
"It was nice to get that first one," Cole said. "But the second one was the big one. Hopefully, that is the one that will get me going. We're a good hockey team, we're a skating team. Everyone is contributing."
Los Angeles began to chip away at Carolina's lead and got on the scoreboard 2:30 into the third period after Cowan one-timed a shot from the slot through traffic and past Gerber to make it 3-1.
The Kings got back within one with 14 minutes left in the game after Belanger batted the puck into an open net to make it 3-2. Sean Avery, who was camped in front, deflected a shot from the point that bounced behind Gerber. Belanger waited for the puck to drop below the crossbar before batting it home.
Los Angeles pulled Garon with just over a minute left in the contest, giving the Kings an extra attacker. Los Angeles had two solid scoring chances but couldn't get the equalizer past Gerber.
