NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Detroit

(Tuesday, December 6th)

Final Score: Detroit 5, New Jersey 2

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Brendan Shanahan scored two goals and Chris Osgood made 25 saves as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New Jersey Devils, 5-2, at Joe Louis Arena.

Tomas Holmstrom notched a goal and an assist and Jason Williams tallied his ninth of the season, a career high, for Detroit, which snapped a two-game skid. Steve Yzerman also scored for the Red Wings, who salvaged a win in the finale of a three-game homestand.

"We got out and got after it," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said. "You don't like to lose at home obviously. You want to win every night. Our guys came out motivated and played really hard. I thought they dominated territorially from the start to the end."

Viktor Kozlov and Zach Parise both scored goals and Scott Clemmensen stopped 39 of the 44 shots he faced for New Jersey, which lost for the second time in its last three contests.

"They don't let up," Clemmensen said. "They score a lot of goals and they score them in bunches. The first half of the game, we thought it was kind of playing more to our style, a little bit slower, trying to keep them off the scoreboard as long as we can, play a little defensive hockey on the road."

New Jersey drew first blood 4:04 into the first period after Kozlov beat Osgood with a backhand shot from the slot for the 1-0 lead. Osgood stopped a slap shot from the right circle, but the rebound went right to Kozlov for the easy tally.

Detroit tied the game with seven minutes left in the first period after Shanahan beat Clemmensen with a wrist shot from the left circle to make it 1-1.

The Devils regained the lead with 11:26 left in the second period after Parise beat Osgood with a one timer from the right circle off a rebound for the 2-1 advantage.

The Red Wings again netted the equalizer while on the power play with 8:03 left in the second period after Shanahan blasted a one-timer from the right circle that beat Clemmensen stick side to make it 2-2.

Detroit took its first lead of the game with 3:18 left in the second period after Holmstrom wristed a shot through Clemmensen's five hole to cap a two-on- one rush for the 3-2 lead.

The Red Wings extended their lead to 4-2 with 1:39 remaining in the second period after Williams beat Clemmensen with a wrist shot from the right circle.

Detroit upped its lead to 5-2 with 9:11 remaining in the contest after Yzerman froze Clemmensen with a backhand deke before shifting to the forehand for the score. Dan Cleary found Yzerman with a pass as he was charging toward the net.
