NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Colorado

(Sunday, December 4th)

Final Score: Buffalo 6, Colorado 4

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Derek Roy scored the game-winning goal while on the power play with 2:27 remaining in the game to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 6-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.

Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht both tallied a goal and an assist and Paul Gaustad scored for Buffalo, which has won six of its last seven contests. Martin Biron made 25 saves for the Sabres.

Marek Svatos scored on a penalty shot for the Avalanche and Peter Budaj gave up just one goal on 13 shots in relief of David Aebischer, who left after stopping 12-of-16 shots in the first period. Alex Tanguay and Rob Blake both added goals and Milan Hejduk tallied three helpers for Colorado, which has lost two straight games.

Trailing 4-2 entering the third period, Colorado scored twice to tie the game.

The Avs clawed back within one after Tanguay tapped a one-timer past Biron. Joe Sakic found Tanguay camped on the far post with a pass from the right circle.

The Avs netted the equalizer with 11:09 remaining in the game after Svatos beat Biron through the five hole on a penalty shot to make it 4-4.

"I was a little bit mad at myself," Biron said. "I gave him an opportunity for him to make his move."

However, with the game tied at 4-4, Roy gathered a rebound and pumped a backhand shot that squirted between Budaj's pads to give the Sabres a 5-4 lead with 2:27 remaining in the game.

"I was just glad to be put out on the power play," Roy said. "We did not get many of those chances tonight. (Pominville) took a shot from the point. I just tried to put in the five hole."

Chris Drury added an empty net goal with 3.5 seconds left to provide the final margin.

Buffalo got on the scoreboard just 2:45 into the contest after Gaustad beat Aebischer with a wrist shot from the slot for his fifth tally of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Colorado got even just over nine minutes later after Karlis Skrastins beat Biron stick side from below the left circle to make it 1-1. Sakic was behind the net and centered to Skrastins below the left circle

The Sabres regained the lead less than three minutes later after Hecht beat Aebischer with a wrist shot stick side for a shorthanded goal.

Buffalo upped its lead to 3-1 with 2:55 left in the first period after Pominville beat Aebischer from the top of the right circle on a wrist shot for an even- strength goal before Mike Grier scored 1:41 later to give the Sabres a 4-1 lead.

The Avalanche began to chip away at Buffalo's lead while on the power play after Blake ripped a slap shot from the high slot that made its way through traffic and past Biron to make it 4-2.
