NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Dallas

(Friday, December 2nd)

Final Score: Dallas 5, Carolina 4 (SO)

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Mike Modano scored the game-winner in the shootout and had two goals in regulation to lead the Dallas Stars over the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-4, at American Airlines Center.

Niko Kapanen and Brenden Morrow scored for the Stars, who won their last three games. Johan Hedberg made 16 saves in the victory.

Justin Williams had a goal and an assist and Niklas Nordgren, Andrew Ladd, and Cory Stillman scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost two of their last three games. Martin Gerber made 27 saves in the loss.

Carolina scored two goals in the third period to tie the game. However, neither team scored in the extra session, despite Carolina having two power plays, and the game was decided in the shootout.

Carolina's Radim Vrbata and Dallas' Sergei Zubov both had their backhand attempts stopped to start the shootout. But, Matt Cullen faked Hedberg into dropping and flicked a wrist shot over his right shoulder.

Jussi Jokinen tied the shootout for Dallas with a wrist shot.

Stillman then lost the puck to Hedberg trying to make a move, giving Modano a chance to win it for the Stars.

Modano went from the backhand to the forehand in front of the crease, attempting to stuff the puck home. Gerber got a piece of the puck, stopping it from crossing the goal line. However, as the puck trickled across the goal line the knob of Gerber's stick hit the puck and it crossed the line to give Dallas the victory.

The Stars got on the scoreboard first with a quick goal by Modano. Antti Miettinen threw a shot on net from the left boards and Gerber made a pad save. Modano had three whacks at the puck and it finally squeezed through Gerber's pads into the net just 46 seconds in.

The Hurricanes tied it up on a goal Nordgren. Frantisek Kaberle threw a wrist shot on net from the left point. Nordgren got his stick on it and deflected it past Hedberg at the 7:41 mark of the first.

However, Dallas scored two goals separated by 5:35 in the first to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

Kapanen threw in a rebound of a Stephane Robidas shot at 9:12 and Modano backhanded a rebound off a Jokinen shot from the right point with 5:13 left in the period.

Carolina made it a 3-2 game on Ladd's third goal of the season 5:24 into the second period.

However, the Stars would regain their two-goal advantage on Morrow's ninth goal of the season with 7:03 left in the second stanza.

The Hurricanes came out charging in the last period and made it 4-3 with a goal by Stillman. Andrew Hutchinson made a drop pass to Stillman and he let fly with a backhand shot from the right circle. The puck hit Stars defenseman Trevor Daly and went into the net at the 7:40 mark.

Carolina tied it up with a power-play goal. Hutchinson took a shot from the high slot and Williams deflected it in with 5:11 left in the game.
