NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Tampa Bay
(Friday, December 2nd)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, Chicago 2 (SO)
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Brad Richards scored the game-winning goal in a shootout, as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-2, at St. Pete Times Forum.
Martin St. Louis had a goal and an assist and Vincent Lecavalier scored the other goal for the Lightning, who have won three straight and seven of their last eight games. John Grahame made 34 saves in the victory.
"Winning is contagious," said Grahame. We made a couple of small, little adjustments a few weeks ago and it seems to have paid off."
Brent Seabrook and Mark Bell scored goals for the Blackhawks, who have lost four of their last five games. Craig Anderson made 25 saves in the loss.
Tampa Bay had the best chance in overtime when Dave Andreychuk came flying into the Chicago zone. His shot beat Anderson, however it dinged off the crossbar and the teams went to the shootout to decide the game.
Tyler Arnason went first in the shootout but his wrist shot flew over the net.
Lecavalier would then score on the backhand after making a nice fake and Rene Bourque would tie it up on a wrist shot that went over Grahame's pad.
Richards' backhand shot squeezed under Anderson's pads and Grahame then made a shoulder save on Bell's wrist shot to give Tampa Bay the victory.
"I think tonight was a big win for our team," said St. Louis. "Sloppy at times, but good teams find a way and we did."
The Lightning drew first blood with a power-play goal. Richards was at the left point and threw a pass to Andreychuk down low on the left side of the net. Andreychuk then fired the puck to St. Louis on the right side and the explosive winger one-timed it into the net at the 11:25 mark of the first period.
The Blackhawks tied the game up before the end of the first stanza. On a delayed penalty call, Jaroslav Spacek was along the left boards and swung the puck to Seabrook in the slot. His wrist shot went between Grahame's left arm and chest with 1:22 left in the period.
Tampa Bay took a 2-1 lead in the second as Dan Boyle hit Lecavalier flying into the Chicago zone. Lecavalier's slapshot from the slot beat Anderson through his five-hole 12:18 into the frame.
However, Chicago tied it up in the closing minute of the second period. Duncan Keith let fly with a shot from the left circle and Grahame made the save, but the rebound went to Bell on the right side and he shot it into the open net with 27 seconds remaining.
"It was a great game," said Blackhawks coach Trent Yawney. "We had enough chances, we just didn't find the back of the net."
The Blackhawks appeared to take the lead in the third period when Matthew Barnaby got a goal, but a review showed that he swung his arm to deflect the puck and the goal was overturned.
Chicago will play on Saturday at Florida...The Lightning are off until Thursday when they will host the Blues...The Blackhawks were 0-for-4 with the man advantage, while Tampa Bay was 1-for-6 on the power-play.
