NHL Game Summary - Florida at Phoenix
(Thursday, January 19th)
Final Score: Phoenix 6, Florida 3
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Shane Doan scored twice in a span of less than three minutes in the first period, while Ladislav Nagy and Keith Ballard each had four assists in Phoenix's 6-3 victory over the Florida Panthers.
Dave Scatchard had a goal and an assist for Phoenix, which had five power play goals. Paul Mara, Zbynek Michalek and Geoff Sanderson also scored for the Coyotes, who have won three of their last four games. Curtis Joseph made 26 saves in the win.
"We're going to score, we're going to score dirty goals," Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky said. "By that I mean tip-ins, deflections, battling in front of the net. You just have to look at statistics at our players. We're that kind of a team."
Martin Gelinas had a goal and an assist for the Panthers. Joe Nieuwendyk and Jozef Stumpel also scored for Florida, which has lost two straight and five of its last seven.
Roberto Luongo stopped 23 shots before being replaced by Jamie McLennan, who let up one goal on seven shots for Florida.
"When you give up five power play goals, you are not going to win the game," Panthers head coach Jacques Martin said.
Gelinas' power-play tally at 7:31 of the first tied the game, but Doan lit the lamp twice with the man advantage in a span of goal 2:48 to move Phoenix ahead for good at 3-1. Doan's first goal came on a rebound off a shot from the left side from Nagy, and the other came on a wrister from the left circle.
Stumpel got Florida within a goal at 5:41 of the second on a redirection of a pass from Sean Hill from the right corner.
However, Scatchard scored with 6:47 left in the period and Mara made it 5-2 with 1:05 remaining in the second on a tip in. Both goals came on the power play.
Nieuwendyk was credited with a goal at 5:58 of the third, but only after a mistake by Michalek for a 5-3 contest. The team faced off from the right circle in the Phoenix zone and the puck slid toward Joseph, but Michalek inadvertently deflected it through the netminder's legs.
Sanderson capped the scoring on the power play with 6:10 left.
