NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Los Angeles

(Saturday, November 26th)

Final Score: Los Angeles 3, Chicago 2

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Luc Robitaille scored the eventual game- winning goal late in the second period as Los Angeles edged Chicago 3-2 at the Staples Center.

Alexander Frolov recorded a goal and an assist and Mathieu Garon stopped 25 shots for the Kings, who registered their fifth straight victory at home and have won four of five overall.

Mark Bell scored once and assisted on another in the loss, the Blackhawks second in a row following a three-game win streak. Nikolai Khabibulin finished with 26 saves.

With the teams deadlocked at 2-2, the Kings' Derek Armstrong rushed up the boards after Chicago's Matthew Barnaby shot wide and sent the puck to Jeremy Roenick near center ice. Roenick then hit a streaking Robitaille, who sped past Barnaby on the right wing, and the veteran moved in and beat Khabibulin stick-side with 2:36 remaining in the second period.

"It was a great play," Robitaille said. "(Armstrong) made a great pass and Jeremy, being the player that he is, knew I had a guy behind me. So he put it where I had to reach for it and (Barnaby) couldn't hook me. It's a kind of play you can't teach."

It was Robitaille's first goal since October 28.

Chicago didn't mount any serious scoring threat afterward until pulling Khabibulin in the waning stages. Bell missed wide right in close with seven seconds to go on the game's final chance.

The Kings struggled on the power play, failing to convert nine opportunities on the evening, but cashed in once while shorthanded to open the scoring.

Eric Belanger corralled a Blackhawks' giveaway in his own end and sent a long pass out to Frolov on the left side for a breakaway goal with 4:15 left in the first period.

Chicago remained on the power play and tied the game just over a minute later when Bell flicked a wrister over Garon's right shoulder.

Kyle Calder put the Blackhawks up 2-1 just 20 seconds into the second period when he knocked home a rebound of Rene Bourque's shot attempt, but Los Angeles would draw even later on in the frame.

The Kings' Craig Conroy skated in from the left side and fired a pass through the crease which bounced off an enemy skate to Pavol Demitra on the right wing. The sniper whipped the puck into the net at the 8:51 mark for his 12th tally of the campaign.

The game had a scary moment midway through the first period when Los Angeles' Ryan Flinn was floored by Blackhawks defenseman Jim Vandermeer during a fight. Flinn hit his head hard on the ice and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

Game Notes

Flinn was called up from Manchester of the American Hockey League prior to the game...Bell has scored a goal in five straight games and has registered seven over that span...Mattias Norstrom played in his 663rd game as a King, which passed Rob Blake for the most by a defenseman in a Los Angeles uniform...Frolov has a five-game point streak, with two goals and nine assists during that stretch...Vandermeer returned to action after missing two games with a bruised ankle...Los Angeles has won four in a row from the Blackhawks, including a 4-2 decision at the United Center on November 11.
