NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Calgary
(Wednesday, November 23rd)
Final Score: Calgary 3, San Jose 2
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Tony Amonte scored the game-winning goal with just over three minutes left in the game and Miikka Kiprusoff made 20 saves as the Calgary Flames defeated the San Joe Sharks, 3-2, at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Roman Hamrlik and Robyn Regehr both scored a goal apiece for the Flames, who have won two straight and 10 of their last 11 games. Calgary has just one loss in the month of November.
"San Jose doesn't give up a lot of shots," Regehr said. "Everytime you shoot, you want to score, so a shot on net is always a good call. They do a great job of coming out and blocking shots."
Grant Stevenson scored his first career NHL goal and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 22 of 25 shots for the Sharks, who have lost seven straight with three of the last five losses coming by shootout. Tom Preissing also notched his fourth goal of the season and Patrick Marleau had two assists for San Jose.
Calgary got on the scoreboard midway through the second period after Hamrlik converted a 3-on-2 rush when he beat Nabokov with a slap shot from the top of the right circle for the 1-0 lead. Jarome Iginla carried the puck over the blue line before shoveling it over to Hamrlik for the score.
San Jose netted the equalizer 1:31 into the second period while on the power play after Marleau blasted a slap shot from the high slot that was saved by Kiprusoff, but the rebound sat on the doorstep and Stevenson banged it home to make it 1-1.
The Flames regained the lead with 8:46 left in the third period after Regehr wristed a shot on goal from the left point that found its way past Nabokov's glove side for a soft goal and a 2-1 advantage.
"It's tough to get momentum back in this game," Sharks defenseman Scott Hannan said. "You have to work to get your bounces and we have to get back to that."
Calgary took a 3-1 lead with 3:33 left in the game after Amonte poked a rebound over a fallen Nabokov. Darren McCarty took a slap shot from the top of the right circle that was stopped by Nabokov, but the rebound dropped to his feet and Amonte easily batted it over Nabokov as he attempted to cover the puck.
The Sharks pulled Nabokov with under a minute left in the game and scored with 7.7 seconds remaining in the contest after Preissing threw a shot on goal from below the right circle that squirted through Kiprusoff's five-hole to make it a 3-2 game.
