NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Carolina

(Sunday, November 20th)

Final Score: Tampa Bay 5, Carolina 2

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Fredrik Modin scored a goal and had two assists as the Tampa Bay Lightning knocked off the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-2, at the RBC Center.

Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards each scored a goal and picked up an assist in the Tampa Bay victory. The Lightning have now won three out of their last four games.

Vaclav Prospal also tallied an assist, extending his points streak to 13- games, a club record for the Lightning.

John Grahame stood tall in net for Tampa Bay, making 20 saves on the night.

"It's a division game, it's a team that's in front of us and we're chasing," said Tampa Bay head coach John Tortorella. "They're a very good hockey team. We've just got to chip away, and that's what we're trying to do to claw back in here. Coming in here into their building and grabbing a couple of points is very important."

Justin Williams scored twice, including on a penalty shot goal, as Carolina lost its second straight game. Cam Ward struggled in net, allowing five goals on 29 shots.

Tampa Bay opened the scoring, taking a 1-0 lead at 7:15 of the first period after Richards notched his eighth goal of the season. Modin's shot from the slot was stopped by Ward, but Richards came from behind the net to back hand the rebound home.

Williams evened things up at 1-1 scoring on a break away early in the second period.

Williams took an outlet pass from Frantisek Kaberle, dashed into the Tampa Bay zone, and shot the puck five-hole on Grahame, who slowed the disc down but it trickled just past the goal line at the 1:27 mark.

The Lightning re-gained their lead after Lecavalier scored his 11th of the season. On the power play, he ripped a shot from the low, left face-off circle that beat Ward on his short side for the 2-1 lead at 6:20.

About two minutes later, Ruslan Fedotenko gave Tampa Bay a 3-1 lead at 8:23 of the second.

Williams scored his second goal of the game after beating Grahame on a penalty shot late in the second stanza. Williams faked a back hand and shot high, glove side, making the score 3-2. The penalty shot goal was the first of his career.

Early in the third period, the Lightning once again went up two goals as Martin St. Louis netted his seventh of the season at 5:44. St. Louis took a nifty behind the back centering pass from Richards and found himself all alone in front and easily slipped the puck past Ward.

Modin made it a 5-2 game, stuffing home a rebound on the power play at 7:30 of the final period.

Carolina did not give much of an effort in the third period and only managed three shots on goal.

"We're in there and we're scrapping with these guys, and it seems like they come down and put it in the back of the net," said Carolina head coach Peter Laviolette. "We'd be down, get fired up, go down and do it again, and just couldn't get ahead tonight. I don't think it was a lopsided game, I just think they made good on their chances and we didn't.

Game Notes

The Bolts are 8-1-4 in the last 13 meetings overall...Richards now has a six- game point streak for Tampa Bay...The loss was only Carolina's second on home ice...Kaberle's assist was the 100th of his career.
