NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Los Angeles
(Saturday, November 19th)
Final Score: Los Angeles 4, Colorado 3
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Pavol Demitra tallied his fourth career hat trick, and netted the winning goal late in the third period to lead the Los Angeles Kings past the Colorado Avalanche, 4-3, at Staples Center.
Sean Avery scored a goal and Alexander Frolov had two assists for Los Angeles, which notched its fourth win in five games. Mathieu Garon made 34 saves for the Kings.
Pierre Turgeon had two goals and an assist and David Aebischer stopped 21 of 25 shots for the Avalanche, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Alex Tanguay also scored for Colorado.
Entering the third period tied at 2-2, Demitra put the Kings ahead after he flipped a wrist shot on goal that hit the skate of a Colorado defender Patrice Brisebois and skipped past Aebischer for the lead with 14:48 remaining.
"He's got that magic stick," Colorado head coach Joel Quenneville. "And I was shocked when he missed one early. But he got two late (goals) and I am happy to see him do well, but not against us."
Less than five minutes later, Turgeon netted his second goal of the game after he got behind the Kings' defense and beat Garon glove side with a wrist shot from left circle to tie the game at 3-3.
However, Demitra beat Aebischer with a wrist shot from down low for the hat trick with 3:32 left. Demitra got the puck along the left half-wall, skated into the left circle and threw a shot on goal that was blocked. Demitra picked up the loose change in front and wristed it in for the game-winning goal.
"I just shot it and somehow the puck came back to me," Demitra said. "I put it back on the net, the goalie was already moving and it ended up being an empty- net goal."
Colorado drew first blood 7:29 into the first period while on the power play after Tanguay beat Garon glove side from the doorstep.
Los Angeles tied the game less than five minutes later after Demitra went in on a breakaway and beat Aebischer through the five hole for a shorthanded goal.
The Kings took their first lead of the contest with 51 seconds remaining in the first period after Avery controlled his own rebound and stuffed a backhand shot past Aebischer.
The Avalanche tied the game at 2-2 with 4:41 left in the second period after Turgeon backhanded a shot into an open net because Garon was out of position. Andrew Brunette attempted a wrist shot from the left circle that sailed wide, but it hit a fallen Avs player and caromed to Turgeon in the slot for the easy score.
