NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Calgary
(Saturday, November 12th)
Final Score: Calgary 5, Colorado 3
Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jarome Iginla had a goal along with an assist, and Calgary scored four times in the first period en route to its sixth consecutive victory, a 5-3 decision over Colorado at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Chuck Kobasew also finished with a goal and an assist while Steven Reinprecht and Roman Hamrlik both added two helpers for the red-hot Flames, who haven't lost since a shootout defeat at San Jose on October 29. Miikka Kiprusoff helped out by making 27 saves.
The Avalanche, who had won six of seven coming in, received two goals from Alex Tanguay. However, goaltender David Aebischer yielded three scores on eight shots before being yanked 15 minutes following the initial whistle.
The Flames erupted for three goals within a 2:05 span to snap a scoreless game.
Iginla started the scoring with 7:06 remaining in the opening period when he wristed a shot past Aebischer following an Avs' giveaway. Just 1:21 later, Tony Amonte poked home the puck from in close for a 2-0 lead.
Calgary would extend the advantage 44 seconds later when Aebischer mishandled a 70-foot shot by Craig MacDonald, which hastened his early exit.
The Flames struck again before the first intermission. With the Avs' Patrice Brisebois in the box with a holding penalty, Reinprecht set up Kobasew with 1:55 to go in the session to make the score 4-0.
Colorado would roar back in the second period by lighting the lamp three times despite registering just eight shots on net.
Brett Clark ripped a shot from the point by Kiprusoff on the power play 4:19 into the period to put the Avalanche on the board. Less than four minutes later, Tanguay was pulled down from behind on a breakaway opportunity and converted the penalty shot to pull the visitors within 4-2.
Tanguay would make it a one-goal game at the 12:41 mark. After Joe Sakic won a faceoff in the Flames' zone, he sent the puck to Tanguay, who promptly slid it underneath Kiprusoff.
Colorado had three power-play chances in the third period but couldn't convert. Andrew Ference would add some insurance when he redirected Kobasew's shot into the net with just under 13 minutes remaining.
