NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Detroit
(Wednesday, November 9th)
Final Score: Detroit 5, Los Angeles 4 (OT)
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Robert Lang scored 1:39 into overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena.
Tomas Holmstrom scored two goals and Manny Legace made 37 saves for Detroit, which won its second straight after a two-game losing streak. Johan Franzen notched a score and Steve Yzerman tallied his first goal of the year in the victory.
Mike Cammalleri, Jeremy Roenick, Craig Conroy and Alexander Frolov scored for the Kings, who lost for the second time in three games. Jason LaBarbera stopped 34 of 39 shots in defeat.
In overtime, Andreas Lilja gathered a loose puck behind the Kings net, skated out in front and tried to jam the puck past LaBarbera. LaBarbera made the save but the rebound kicked out to his left, where Lang wristed the puck high to the glove side for the winner.
"I think it's very good for us to play these teams that are up in the standings and sort of get our little check where we stand," Lang said.
Trailing 4-2 late in the third period, Los Angeles scored twice to force overtime.
Twenty-five seconds after Detroit went ahead by two goals, Conroy tapped home a rebound to get the Kings back within one. Pavol Demitra blasted a slap shot from the right circle, but Legace made a right-pad kick save. The rebound, however, went right to Conroy on the doorstep and he batted it over Legace for the goal.
The Kings netted the equalizer with 3:48 left in the third after Frolov caused a Detroit turnover at the blue line. He controlled the loose puck and deked Legace to his forehand before flipping the puck into the open net for the 4-4 tie.
"I liked our effort tonight, I liked our intensity," Kings head coach Andy Murray said. "I thought we played hard the whole night. We gave up a couple of goals we'd like to have back. Mistakes that we made and they capitalized."
Ahead by a goal entering the third period Detroit extended its lead to 3-1 just 16 seconds into the frame after Holmstrom stole the puck behind the Kings' net and jammed it past LaBarbera.
Los Angeles drew back within one nearly four minutes later after Roenick beat Legace with a slap shot from the top of the left circle to make it 3-2.
The Red Wings pushed their lead to 4-2 with 6:41 remaining in the third period after Holmstrom tapped the puck past a moving LaBarbera. Pavel Datsyuk gained the offensive zone before passing the puck into the slot from the left circle. Two Wings converged on LaBarbera's crease, with Holmstrom getting there first to tuck the goal just inside the right post.
The Kings drew first blood just over 3 1/2 minutes into the contest while on the power play after Cammalleri beat Legace through the five-hole for a 1-0 lead. Frolov passed the puck from the slot to the left circle, where Cammalleri wristed a shot on goal that squirted between Legace's pads.
"I thought at the start of the game, we weren't used to playing at that level," Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said. "They were quick. It took us awhile to get going."
Detroit got even just under five minutes later after Yzerman scored his first goal of the season. Dan Cleary gained the offensive zone and dumped the puck behind the Kings' net. Cleary passed the puck along the boards to Mathieu Schneider, who one-timed a pass to Yzerman in the slot. Yzerman tipped the puck past LaBarbera for the 1-1 tie.
The Red Wings took their first lead of the game in the second period after Franzen batted the puck past LaBarbera for a shorthanded goal. Franzen gained the zone before losing control of the puck. Cleary gathered the loose puck and backhanded a pass into the slot. Franzen crashed the net and jammed it past LaBarbera for a 2-1 advantage.
