NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Colorado

(Tuesday, November 8th)

Final Score: Colorado 5, San Jose 2

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Pierre Turgeon scored his 500th career goal and Alex Tanguay scored twice as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the San Jose Sharks, 5-2, at the Pepsi Center.

Turgeon's tally came in the third period on the power play as he became the 34th player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal plateau.

"It's a nice feeling," said Turgeon on reaching the milestone. "It's an honor to be a part of this."

Fellow 500-goal scorer Joe Sakic also moved up in the record book as he recorded an assist in the game for his 1,415 career point, moving him into 14th place all-time, surpassing Doug Gilmour.

Marek Svatos and John-Michael Liles added goals for the Avalanche, who won for the fifth time in six games. David Aebischer stopped 31 shots in the win.

Jonathan Cheechoo and Tom Preissing scored for the Sharks, who lost for the second straight time after winning five straight. Brad Stuart added two assists for San Jose, while Vesa Toskala gave up five goals on 23 shots faced.

With the Avalanche on a 5-on-3 power play, Turgeon, who was stationed to the right of the goal mouth, took a cross-ice pass from Svatos and the center easily stuffed the puck into the net for his milestone and a 4-2 lead at the 9:16 mark of the third period.

Colorado had taken a 3-1 lead 8:01 into the second period on Svatos' sixth goal of the season. Turgeon assisted on the tally as Svatos ripped a bouncing puck from the left circle into the net.

San Jose responded with 4:14 left in the second. After a shot from the point hit traffic and was loose in front of the net, Cheechoo skated in and flipped the puck into the net to make it a 3-2 game before Turgeon's goal.

The Avalanche then broke the game open after Tanguay beat Toskala glove side with a breakaway goal with 7:18 left in the third frame to account for the final score.

Colorado took a 2-0 lead into the second stanza after goals by Liles and Tanguay, with Tanguay's goal coming at the three-minute mark of the opening period on a shot from the bottom of the left circle.

San Jose got on the board 2:38 into the second when Preissing fired a rebound into a wide open net from the right circle.
