Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, NY Islanders 0
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Sebastien Caron made 29 saves and recorded his first shutout of the season to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.
Sidney Crosby scored a goal and added two assists while Sergei Gonchar scored twice and John LeClair had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who won for the first time in three games. Andy Hilbert added two helpers.
"We're coming together as a team, and we're all growing up together," said Caron.
Garth Snow started for New York and allowed four goals on 29 shots in the loss, the third straight for the Islanders.
After a scoreless opening period, the Penguins scored three times in the middle session to take a 3-0 lead into the final frame.
The Pens went up 1-0 11:54 into the second period on Gonchar's ninth tally of the season. From the right point, Gonchar ripped a slap shot that hit off an Islander player in front and into the top left corner of the net for the power-play goal.
A little over a minute later, LeClair deflected a centering pass from Ryan Malone in front past Snow on his glove side for the 2-0 edge.
With 1:04 left in the second stanza, Crosby gathered a loose puck in the low slot and flipped a backhander past Snow for a 3-0 lead.
Early in the third period, New York's Sean Bergenheim was awarded a penalty shot for being hooked down on a breakaway. On the penalty shot chance, Bergenheim tried to beat Caron through his five hole, but the netminder closed it off and made a stick save to keep the Pens three-goal lead intact.
"I tried to take it to the left side and go five-hole, and it hit his stick," Bergenheim said. "We were horrible in the first two periods. We played a little better in the third."
Gonchar scored his second of the game at 18:16 of the third period on the power play to cap the scoring.
The Isles did not have many quality scoring chances in the final frame as Caron made 10 saves in the third.
