NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Buffalo
(Thursday, January 12th)
Final Score: Phoenix 2, Buffalo 1 (SO)
Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Geoff Sanderson was the only player to score in the shootout as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, at HSBC Arena.
Oleg Saprykin scored the Coyotes' other goal and Brian Boucher made 30 saves for Phoenix, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Jason Pominville tallied the Sabres' lone goal while Martin Biron stopped 39- of-40 shots and 2-of-3 in the shootout for Buffalo, which has lost two straight and three of the last four games.
Sanderson, who began the second round of the shootout, deked to his backhand before snapping a forehand shot over the right pad of Biron to give the Sabres the advantage. On Buffalo's next two attempts, Maxim Afinogenov had the puck roll off his stick and Pominville shot wide to seal the win for Phoenix.
"Sanderson's got a quick release, a quick shot," Biron said. "When he came in, he went to his forehand. I exploded over there. He shot it about an inch over my pad, a good move. He's got quick hands, a lot of speed."
Biron opened the shootout with a pad save on Ladislav Nagy before Boucher made a stick save on Tim Connolly. Mike Comrie then had a chance to win the game after Sanderson's tally, but Comrie's shot rolled wide.
In overtime, the Sabres had a two-man advantage for 47 seconds and failed to score to force the shootout.
Buffalo got on the scoreboard 12:06 into the first period while on the power play after Pominville banged a secondary rebound into an open net for a 1-0 lead. Brian Campbell took a shot from the high slot and it was saved by Boucher, but Chris Drury was there to try to knock home the rebound. Boucher made a pad save on Drury, but the rebound squirted to Pominville in front.
"Campbell missed the net there," Pominville said. "Drury kind of chipped it through, missed the net. It found a hole and went right on my stick. The puck just seemed to find me."
Phoenix tied the game in the early stages of the third period after Saprykin took a feed from behind the Sabres' net and beat Biron glove side from the slot to make it 1-1. Sanderson held the puck behind the net before finding Saprykin in the slot for the equalizer.
