NHL Game Summary - Florida at NY Rangers

(Saturday, January 7th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 4, Florida 0

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist made 38 saves for his second shutout of the season and Jaromir Jagr scored a pair of goals, as the New York Rangers rolled to a 4-0 victory over the Florida Panthers at Madison Square Garden.

Ville Nieminen and Petr Prucha also scored and Michael Nylander assisted on three goals for the Rangers, who had lost three straight overtime games.

Lundqvist stopped 15 shots in each of the first two periods and turned aside eight more in the third. Both of his shutouts have come against Florida, as he blanked the Panthers on 23 shots in a 4-0 victory on October 17.

"Our guys always took the puck and cleared it," Lundqvist said about his defense. "We played really smart out there. The whole team was really focused on getting two points today and we did it."

Roberto Luongo made 21 saves in defeat, as Florida lost its third straight on a five-game road trip that ends Sunday afternoon in Washington.

"It's just one of those nights," said Luongo. "You have to put it behind you and have to get ready for tomorrow -- finish the trip off right."

The Panthers won the first game of the road swing on New Year's Day at Buffalo, then dropped games against all three New York City area teams -- falling at New Jersey and on Long Island before Saturday's setback.

Jagr opened the scoring just 4:39 into the game, but was the recipient of some nice work by Nylander and Martin Straka.

Nylander worked the puck off the right boards and fired a pass into the left circle for Straka, who fed a wide open Jagr in the right circle. Luongo had come far out of the crease to face Straka and left a wide open cage for Jagr.

Nieminen added his fifth of the season late in the opening period, flipping the rebound of his first shot over Luongo's right pad.

Prucha made it 3-0 at 6:27 of the second period, cashing in a 5-on-3 power play for his 20th goal. He became the first Ranger rookie to score 20 goals since Mike York in 1999-2000.

Jagr put the finishing touches on the scoring midway through the third, backhanding home a shot from the low right circle for his 27th goal.
