NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Minnesota

(Saturday, March 25th)

Final Score: San Jose 5, Minnesota 1

St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Jonathan Cheechoo posted a pair of goals and added an assist as San Jose downed Minnesota, 5-1, at the Xcel Energy Center.

Cheechoo set a franchise record for goals in a season with his 45th goal of the year for the Sharks, who have won three of four. Patrick Marleau notched a goal and an assist, while Joe Thornton had three helpers. Nils Ekman added a pair of assists.

"It's a good thing," Cheechoo said. "I was pretty excited. I never expected anything like this coming in. I just wanted to be at this level, contribute and anything I get on the side is just a bonus."

Brian Rolston scored for the Wild, who have lost four of five.

Cheechoo scored on a wrister glove side, assisted by Ekman and Thornton at the 3:37 mark of the opening period to put the Sharks up 1-0.

Rolston tied the game at 1-1 on a backhander glove side assisted by Randy Robitaille and Nick Schultz at 8:32 in the second period.

Milan Michalek gave San Jose a 2-1 lead with a backhander on the power play at the 13:18 mark of the second.

Marleau fired a snap shot just inside the left post assisted by Thornton on the power play at the 5:43 mark of the third period to put the Sharks up 3-1.

Ekman dropped the puck perfectly behind him on a breakaway to Cheechoo, who scored with a slap shot from the right circle at the 11:41 mark to put the Sharks ahead 4-1 in the final frame.

Late in the third period, Matt Carle scored his first career goal in his first career game on an unassisted wrist shot.

Vesa Toskala recorded 24 saves for the Sharks, while Manny Fernandez allowed five goals on 23 shots for the Wild.

"No one is going to tell us we're done so we're going to try and keep fighting and try and get as many wins as we can," Robitaille said. "It's not as much about the wins and losses right now. It's about getting our game to where we want it to be."

The Sharks, who are just 13-17-4 as the visitor, played the third test of a five-game road trip tonight.
