NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Tampa Bay

(Saturday, March 25th)

Final Score: Tampa Bay 4, NY Rangers 3 (SO)

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Brad Richards scored the lone goal of the shootout to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Richards added two assists in regulation while Fredrik Modin tallied a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay, which won for the fourth time in its last five games overall. John Grahame finished with 20 saves as the Lightning moved into sole possession of sixth-place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Petr Prucha and Jaromir Jagr each notched a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who are now tied with the Philadelphia Flyers atop the Atlantic Division with 90 points. The Flyers stormed past Ottawa 6-3 on Saturday.

Henrik Lundqvist allowed three goals on 34 shots as New York lost in the shootout in back-to-back games.

After Jagr and Petr Sykora could not score for the Rangers in the shootout, and Tampa's Vincent Lecavalier was stopped by Lundqvist, Richards took the ice as the Lightning's second shooter. He dashed in on goal, faking a backhander and then sliding the puck past the outstretched right pad of Lundqvist for the goal. Michael Nylander had a chance to keep the shootout going, but he lost control of the puck down low after attempting to deke.

The Rangers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 11:57 of the opening period after Sykora tallied a power-play goal.

Prucha made it a 2-0 game with just 1:56 left in the first period with another power-play tally. From behind the net, Nylander sent a pass out in front to Prucha, who one-timed the feed through Grahame's five hole from the tip of the crease.

Just 34 seconds later, Martin St. Louis scooped up a loose puck at the right side of the net and banked the disc off Lundqvist's back and across the goal line to make it 2-1.

Jagr gave the Rangers a 3-1 edge, netting his 51st goal of the campaign just 30 seconds into the second stanza.

At the 3:13 mark of the second period, Modin blasted a slap shot from the high slot that beat a screened Lundqvist to make it a 3-2 game.

Cory Sarich's first goal of the season at 11:15 of the second stanza tied the game at 3-3.

Neither team managed to light the lamp in the third period to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Tampa Bay had several chances to win it. About two minutes in, Lecavalier was stoned on a breakaway by Lundqvist. The Lightning also had a power-play chance in overtime, but they could not score.
