NHL Game Summary - Washington at Boston

(Monday, April 10th)

Final Score: Washington 2, Boston 1 (OT)

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Alexander Ovechkin got his 100th point in style as his goal with 90 seconds left in overtime gave the Washington Capitals a 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden.

Ovechkin became the first rookie to amass 100 points in a season since Joe Juneau and Teemu Selanne accomplished the feat during the 1992-93 campaign. Also, Ovechkin registered his 49th goal and needs just one more to become the first rookie with 50 goals since Selanne in '92-93.

Dainius Zubrus had a goal and an assist and Olaf Kolzig stopped 37 shots for the Capitals, who ended a four-game losing streak.

Mark Stuart netted the lone goal and Tim Thomas made 25 saves for the Bruins, who have lost two straight and six of their last seven games.

In the extra session Zubrus had the puck in his end and fired a pass to Ovechkin flying into the neutral zone along the left wing. Ovechkin skated into the Bruins zone, cut across the center and from the top of the right circle snapped a wrister that beat Thomas under the glove for the game winner.

"Zuby (Zubrus) did a great job and gave me a pass in empty ice," said Ovechkin about the goal. "I went to the middle and I know I was going to shoot. If I stay in the zone then we don't have a chance to score. I shot it and Bam...goal."

The Bruins outshot the Capitals 11-5 in the opening 20 minutes, but neither side was able to get on the scoreboard.

Zubrus got the Capitals on the board when he brought the puck down the slot in the Bruins zone and from the inside left circle snapped a wrister that beat Thomas on the short side with 4:14 left in the second.

Ovechkin almost put his squad up 2-0 with under 12 minutes to play in the third when he stickhandled past two Bruin defenders. But, Thomas came up with a nice blocker save on the wrist shot from down low.

The save paid off as Stuart tied the game with 9:39 left. Shawn McEachern made a centering pass from the right circle that deflected off of a Washington stick. Stuart, however got it in the high slot and fired a wrister into the right corner for his first career NHL goal.

"It was just nice to get that first one," said Stuart. "It was exciting but it would have been nice to get it with a win. I'm just happy I got it out of the way."
