NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Columbus

(Saturday, April 8th)

Final Score: Detroit 4, Columbus 2

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Jason Williams scored the game-winning goal to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory and a sweep of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the back end of a home-and-home at Nationwide Arena.

Brendan Shanahan, Tomas Holmstrom and Chris Chelios all tallied goals for the Red Wings, who have won four straight and with 116 points are nine points ahead of Dallas for first overall in the Western Conference and eight points ahead of Carolina and Ottawa for first place overall in the NHL.

Chris Osgood stopped 27 shots for Detroit, which played its last game against Columbus this season and finished 7-1 against the club this year.

Jan Hrdina and Manny Malhotra both tallied goals and Pascal Leclaire stopped 26 of 29 shots for the Blue Jackets, who have lost their last two games.

Holmstrom had the lone shootout tally on Friday as the Red Wings edged the Blue Jackets, 6-5, at Joe Louis Arena. Rick Nash posted his first career hat trick in the loss.

The Blue Jackets got on the board first when Hrdina's shot from the right point went through a screen and between the five-hole of Osgood 3:03 into the first period.

Detroit, though, took a 2-1 lead before the conclusion of the first period.

Andreas Lilja let fly with a shot from the high slot that Mark Mowers deflected on net. Leclaire made the save, but the puck popped into the air and Shanahan banged it out of mid-air for his 36th goal of the year with 7:54 left in the first. Holmstrom banged in a rebound to give the Red Wings the lead with 2:41 left.

Columbus tied the game when Malhotra brought the puck into the Detroit zone on a rush and from the top of the right circle let fly with a slap shot that went into the right corner of the net 9:24 into the second.

However, the Red Wings responded less than two minutes later when Williams netted his 20th goal of the season to give his squad a 3-2 lead.

Osgood turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the third period and with the Columbus goaltender pulled Chelios sealed the win for Detroit with an empty-net goal in the closing seconds of the game.
