NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Dallas

(Wednesday, January 4th)

Final Score: Dallas 3, Vancouver 1

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Steve Ott and Jason Arnott scored 85 seconds apart in the third period, as the Dallas Stars rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at AmericanAirlines Center.

Mike Modano also scored for Dallas, which went 0-1-1 on a home-and-home set with the Los Angeles Kings that bridged the turn of the calendar year. Marty Turco posted 20 saves for the Stars, who are now 6-4-1 in their last 11 games.

Brendan Morrison netted the lone goal for the Canucks, who have lost four of their last five overall. Alexander Auld allowed three goals on 37 shots in the losing effort.

Trailing 1-0 midway through the third period, the Stars struck twice in a 85- second span to take the lead for good.

First, at the 12:17 mark, a slap shot by Sergei Zubov from the right point was deflected in front by Ott and his fourth goal of 2005-06 tied the contest at 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, the Stars grabbed the lead. Arnott walked out from behind the net with control of the puck and used interference by teammate Brenden Morrow to beat Auld up high from the near the left post with 6:18 to play in regulation.

Later in the final session, Modano sealed the victory with his 16th goal. He intercepted an ill-advised pass through the neutral zone and streaked over the blue line before beating Auld with a blazing wrist shot from the top of the right circle at 17:34.

Following the scoreless opening period, the Canucks took a 1-0 lead near the midpoint of the second.

A holding penalty called on Arnott allowed the dangerous Vancouver power play to work the puck around the perimeter. Nolan Baumgartner fed a pass to Morrison, who drifted in and released a slap shot from the top of the left circle.

Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi jumped in front of Turco as the shot was approaching the net and the screen was timed perfectly. Morrison's eighth goal of the season nipped the crossbar on its way into the cage and Vancouver led 1-0 at 8:31.
