NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Montreal

(Tuesday, January 3rd)

Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, Montreal 4

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby and Michel Ouellet scored two goals apiece to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Montreal Canadiens, 6-4, at the Bell Centre.

Maxime Talbot tallied a goal and an assist and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves for Pittsburgh, which has won three of its last four games. Shane Endicott added his first goal of the season for the Pens.

Jan Bulis notched a goal and an assist and Jose Theodore stopped 30 of the 36 shots he faced for Montreal, which has lost three straight and five of the last six contests. Steve Begin, Sheldon Souray and Jonathan Ferland added goals for the Canadiens.

Tied 4-4 in the third period, the Penguins netted a pair of goals to seal the win.

Crosby scored the go-ahead goal 1:58 into the third period after he tipped home a shot from Matt Murley past Theodore to make it 5-4. Ouellet added his seventh goal of the season with 5:03 left for the final margin.

"It would have been nice to get an empty net goal," said Crosby, who wanted his first career NHL hat trick. "We had a little scare when they came back in the second. But it was a good test for us, a test of character. It showed the confidence we have in each other now to come back."

Pittsburgh scored three goals in the first 13:17 of the contest to jump out to a big lead. Crosby opened the scoring after he finished a 2-on-1 rush with a goal for a 1-0 lead. Endicott upped the Pens' advantage after he beat Theodore with a backhander from down low for a shorthanded tally. Talbot made it 3-0 after he stuffed a rebound into the back of the net.

"I don't know if we thought things were going to be easy the rest of the way, that teams were going to lay down for us," Souray said. "The guys that were lineup haven't held up their end of the deal. To a man, we can all play better."

Undaunted, Montreal scored the next four goals to take its first lead of the game.

Bulis got the Habs on the scoreboard with 20 secondS left in the first period after his wrister beat Fleury stick side to make it 3-1. Begin cut Pittsburgh's lead to 3-2 after he converted from the slot just 2:26 into the second stanza.

Souray netted the equalizer 5:30 into the second period after he beat Fleury with a wrist shot from the right circle. The Canadiens took the lead just 1:13 later after Ferland's one-timer from the slot beat Fleury.

Pittsburgh retied the game with 1:08 left in the second stanza, after Ouellet's shot from the high slot found its way past Theodore for a power-play tally that made it 4-4.
